What if instead it continued to grow and cover most of Eurasia? Let's also assume The Library of Alexandria was not destroyed. The Library of Alexandria apparently held plans for the steam engine. So what if the industrial revolution happened in 200 AD instead of 1700 AD and Rome was the center of all this?

Kind of makes you think don't it?

Yet those civilizations before the Middle Ages were far more religious than Christian civilizations in Dark Ages, which was only situated in Western Europe. This had no effect on the rest of the world, especially in the Middle-East where the Islamic Golden Age came to play almost immediate after the Middle Ages had started. This Golden Age basically just transferred the balance of knowledge from Europe to the Arab world, despite being highly devoted to the Islamic religion. You had things like the Scientific Method, discovery of the sum formula for the fourth power, quasicrytalline geometry, Law of sines, finding of the Andromeda constellation, ideas leading to the concept of natural selection

The Dark Ages were far more a void of discovery

And to add, that image is based on a simple slippery slop

I'm fully aware that the Dark Ages weren't as dark as commonly thought, but have this thing called a sense of humor. I don't know if whoever made that picture in the first place was aiming for that, though.

Personally, I think that picture is bogus. And there's a good reason for it too.

Although, over the last few decades, technology has accelerated greatly, you're forgetting one thing. With every leap and hurdle we jump, the next one grows bigger. As you progress down the line, the hurdles you have to take, and this distance you have to cover to make more progress on what you already have grows bigger every single time.

It's a lot like a car really. You can drive faster and faster, going higher on the speedometer, but eventually you're going to hit the speed limit for how fast the car can go. You'll be going at maximum speed and whether you like it or not you won't be able to travel any faster.

Just because we make progress doesn't mean we will continue to make progress.

The second reason I have, is that we as a species are not accelerating with our own technology either. We aren't evolving and changing with it. In fact, we're regressing. Technology will always exist to make people's live's easier, and that's okay. But we've taken the wrong path, and we have two things working against us here.

The factor of numbers, "mob mentality" has been scientifically proven that the more people you have in an area, the lower the IQ of the group becomes as a whole. And because of this, and the large majority of the human population that lives in cities, technology has evolved mainly to go through the route of comfort, and above all segments.

Our population is controlled and guided by the government, the media, and corporations which are all connected together for the same purpose in this day and age. Discovery and invention are no longer for the sake of progress. It's "when can we release this for more money and how long do we hold this back." Basically, without technology nowadays, people are either quite stupid or incredibly helpless, because through that advent and acceleration of technology, we've forgotten something key. Remembering the old ways. You don't get anywhere without remembering your roots.

Personally, I belive that at the rate and path we're taking, we're going to go through another crash. The second dark ages if you will.

If the Roman empire had survived all the way up to now, we might be different. But at the same time, we might have hit the same barriers we currently need to overcome. Population overcrowding, mass and over consumption, environmental care and species preservation.

You're very, very mistaken about the rate at which technology accelerates. While it is true that with each innovation the next one becomes more elusive (in a very, very general sense, at least), our capacity to innovate exponentially increases as well.

This is true for all areas of science, but is most important and evident in computer science. While Moore's law continues to hold (and there is no reason to believe that it will cease), our ability to invent and understand follows the line of technological increase. More powerful computers allow for more complicated models, more automation, and therefore quicker innovation. The very linear growth of the size of the hurdles is totally overshadowed by the exponential increase of our ability to jump them.
