What does "insecure" mean?

Tell me in your own words what "insecure" means. What makes a person insecure?

Generally, I always thought that to be insecure meant that you lacked confidence or personal validation of some sort.

Apparently, people who judge others are insecure--even though that doesn't make any sense. If anything, judgmental people are the most secure people on the planet. So I don't know what the fuck that's all about.

As for the whole judging thing, I don't know how that relates to being insecure about yourself.

It means you're unsure and contemptuous about your place in the world. You tell yourself these stories about yourself, but you're insecure that they're true. Which is why you have to bring down others and look externally at what they do, to feel more secure that you're doing better than them.

Generally I see it as low confidence about certain aspects, physical or mental, about yourself.

I don't see judging someone an indication of insecurity at all. If I judge the fat Walmart mom buying gallons of ice cream and bags chips does that make me insecure about my own weight? Nah

Even if I factually am? I couldn't possibly be more "sure" about my place in the world right now. Nothing about my habitual judging of other people takes away from that--in fact, it merely reinforces it. I've self-actualized that I'm really good at judging people, so I do it, and I will continue to do it for the rest of my life. I'm so comfortable with it, I never want to let that go.

How insecure of me. It's so insecure to be secure.

Yeah, exactly. With your big truck example, it almost reveals that the person accusing the truck owner of insecurity is actually the insecure one himself. Lots of people are jealous, indignant, or otherwise in their feelings over other people's achievements. So they try to paint them as superficial, as a way to validate themselves--because they don't have anything else to feel validated over.

In reality, deep down (or maybe not so deep down), they just want that big truck, and they're upset that someone else has it.

I'm sure that's not the case for everybody, but that's how it comes across to me a lot of the time.

Generally, SecondClass is right, I find: people judge to validate themselves. But I'm not going to pretend that judgement and security are somehow mutually exclusive.
