i dont think it's difficult for talented people. it appears difficult because the vast majority of idiots who go to school for game design shouldn't have ever been given a keyboard in the first place.

Economics. Either in the civil service, or somewhere like the IMF or the World Bank. Ultimate goal is governor of the Bank of England. After that (or somewhere down the line) a move into politics.

Failing that, I'll join up as a commissioned officer in either the Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force.

Trying gives a chance. Giving up because somethign is unlikely means there's no chance at all.

Besides, I still want to turn my own scifi stuff into a game.

Yeah. Good people get in. Shit people don't. Well... it's the other way around now. ANYWAY-

Games is an industry that is still growing. and the skills you do are applicable in a shit ton of areas of computing. Sowhile that's good as a fallback, the opportunity to work on my favourite franchises - Halo and Fallout - is always going to be my ultimate ambition. And there's little short of me losing my interest int he series' that would deter me from that.

i don't know how this works across the pond, but could you potentially minor in games design and major in computer science, so you could have a job available to you right out of uni?

Criminal Justice. I'd like to get into the FBI or U.S. Marshals. Might even go into Homeland Security at first depending if my brother is still in it at that point.

Being a Pro Cyclist is my main goal. After that, I'd like to move into a coaching role.

Computer Science. I'm not sure what I want to do with it yet though.
