Actually there are a fair few purported theories as to why it occurs, all of which are evolutionarily sound (Or fairly close anyway).

I could try and explain it all and make a pigs ear of it, but the author of this article does a splendid job so I'd just have a read

tl;dr is that if the allele theory is the correct one, it increases fertility/reproductive rates in females and occasionally gets passed onto males so the net result is still a positive shift on the natural selection route.
