Why didn't Krypton have colonies? [Serious question for DC guys]

Seriously. They have huge-ass spaceships and shit, why didn't they have a network of planetary colonies or space-borne habitats to house a good amount of the species even before they got roflstomp'd?

Why did they waste their super cool spaceship on prisoners instead of just letting them die?

So. Were these colonies like the size of how our colony on mars is going to be in a couple decades, or full on terraformed and habitable with trade routes and shit?

Because if it's the latter, I don't see why they couldn't just move the population.

Well not sure in the movie. They did expand but something went wrong with their terraforming machines and they lost all their colonies. From that time onwards they have remained on Krypton.
