The praise comes from its technical achievements. It was the first to emphasise cinematography to establish tone and mood, whereas films at the time were really just theatrical performances on a camera.

I think it's a decent film, certainly not what I would consider the best film ever made, but I can understand why critics and film experts consider it to be the holy grail of film making due to how well crafted it is, and how it put film on the map in terms of artistry.

Much about the way movies are filmed now can be attributed to how Citizen Kane was filmed. Its narrative structure and cinematography BROKE NEW GROUND™ and are still a marvel to watch to this day, especially considering it was made in the early 40s. Orson Welles is one of the biggest reasons why film is considered an art form.

Don't go into it thinking it's supposed to be the best movie ever, though. You'll just end up hating it.

What it really is is a great film made in an era where nothing else was all that great. It transcended the schlock of its day and stood the test of time reasonably well. It's an 8/10.
