The fact that it would take so long to get a working colony let alone a terreformed Mars going, "we" wouldn't be there to see it at current levels of technology.

Also everything above. Mars' crust is at least twice the thickness of Earth's, making geothermal energy a pipe dream since the temp-depth gradients are ridiculously low. All energy would have to be transported from Earth, which already has it's own energy crisis looming.

Last I read, Martian soil was considered at least good enough to use for hydroponics, so I suppose that would account for filtering and whatnot. It was a while back so it could have changed since then though.

I know the water they found was thought to be full of perchlorates (idk if spelt right) which are toxic as fuck though, so it could be that. Plus I'm pretty sure they later disproved the water as just shifting sand dunes anyway.

Moonbase first, and terraforming is largely pointless when it's more efficient to disassemble planets and asteroids to build space habitats.
