there are multiple points where it's like "okay this doesn't really fit at all" but i was taken off guard by the number of beats that would actually match up exactly with what's going on, or a song/lyrics just generally matching the vibe of the scene

kinda all of it? i would describe the movie as the best part though, yeah

it's a strange case where if you know what it's trying to do, and you can stomach the first half, which is not as good and has a lot of really dumb moments, but has necessary character developments and stuff that you need for certain emotional payoffs to work later, then you're going to have a pretty good time

dead-ass, even though the show is still a 6-borderline-7 for me, and EoE is an 8, the franchise taken as a whole would probably be a 9/10 for me if i still didn't have the (apparently disappointing) rebuild movies to watch

but if you find yourself losing patience with the characters' neuroticisms, which i can't really blame you for, then it'll only start becoming apparent what the show is really trying to do around the second half of the show, where it explodes in quality, and then EoE caps it all off with the most artistically gratifying mindfuck i have ever seen in my life

but that was in part due to the fact that i watched the entire show first, sooo

the average person who's into this type of show, i'd recommend watching at least six episodes
personally, i was glued to the screen after episode 4

if i didn't already know that EoE existed prior to watching those last two episodes, i probably wouldn't have liked them as much as i did

but i did know, so i was able to enjoy them a lot more than the average person i think

just knowing how hard the mecha shit fell by the wayside towards the end of that series is incredibly refreshing, because now i don't have to feel as embarrassed to admit that i enjoyed a mecha show, since it's not really a mecha show (though that does sort of complicate things whenever i try to talk about it with the uninitiated)

i found the philosophizing really fun, and i think they explored shinji's broken psychology in a very beautiful and satisfying way, especially considering how much i'm able to relate with all his existential issues

i still prefer EoE of course, because i'm just a sucker for big, depressing, mindfucky, "spectacle"-type films, and it's obviously cooler to see EVERY single character get their arc fulfilled rather than just shinji's

but rather than view it as a replacement, i prefer to look at the two endings as complementary, so that way, i can have fun trying to parse what that all "means" for myself

sidenote, people who have unironic debates about who the "best girl" in NGE is need to be wiped off of the fucking planet

MFW anime exposure has caused Verb to miss the point entirely and accept a literal child molester as "Best Girl" when the entire point was everyone in the show being the worst. (But especially Yui)

i didn't miss that point at all actually, i'm just being facetious (even though misato is genuinely my favorite character)

child molestor is probably over-the-top though, she offered shinji pity sex towards the very end when their lives are falling apart, but she immediately retracted when shinji said no

a child molestor probably wouldn't have cared

and even then, whether she was offering him sex is kind of ambiguous anyway, maybe she just wanted to cuddle or something and shinji just assumed the worst

I used to hate Asuka, and I mean HATE her. I never understood why people found her so appealing, but as I got older I started to see more and more of myself in her. The second half of February and the entirety of the month of March for me was a straight up IRL version of Episode 22 with me as Asuka. So when I rewatched the series again it was incredibly painful to stomach through that episode in particular because it hit so close to home.

But that's just me, most people just like the fiery abrasive personality.

it`s not like I like her or something, she just bring big tone shift in series, bringing on a surface some details

The reason why she was brought in ep 8 and not earlier is also obvious, other characters needed introduction and Asuka`s persona would overshadow it

You see Shinji is a sponge for human emotions, he adopts all emotions around him. Asuka presence allow him to be angry on someone by both having Asuka being his source for that emotions and Asuka being person on which he could be pissed of and argue with

Of course Asuka is a foreign object to Evangelion, she is literally a foreigner, but she was needed, because NGE is all about how humans interact with each other and Asuka brings more interaction
