are you forgetting about the DLC? all 4 DLC were fantastic, and the game fleshed out its world very well. add the decent gameplay, good AI, great soundtrack, fantastic aesthetics, and i think its pretty damn good

Nope. In terms of writing, Black Isle, and in extension Obsidian, were superior, but in terms of gameplay, Fallout 3 greatly enhanced it.

The DLC was just as bad and unfaithful to the previous games as the vanilla game.
Gameplay and the radio was the only good thing going for it.

fallout 3 took the series in an interesting direction but i think the execution was kinda iffy, considering just how strong VATS is. i think new vegas improved on the gameplay mechanics a lot, especially with the introduction of hardcore mode

I do find Fallout 2 fun but you are right about the gameplay. Even though it's another FPS game it does give it replay value. With Fallout 2 it's mainly a story game with fun gameplay that last as long as you're doing the quests. With Fallout 3 and NV the gameplay can have longer replay value due to it being what it is.

Not just gameplay, but also atmosphere. You can complain about the story and how retcons a lot of the original, but you would really be hard pressed to find a true amazing story in any game. The game is fun to play, it doesn't has as much stuff as New Vegas, which is why I prefer New Vegas, but is is still genuinely. Bethesda cane make damn good worlds, even if they are buggy. Obsidian has them totally beat on story though.

There were some gameplay mechanics in Fallout 3 I hated. Like the inability to properly aim down the sites. VATS, I never really used VATS, but I always hated that you were forced to do the entire VATS thing without able to exit. It would be really would be really shit when you reloaded, especially if your weapon was close to breaking and it had the little extra cutscene.
