When the artists do graphic novels they have a finite story arc. Think Frank Miller's work. Characters die, shit goes down and there's an end to the story. It doesn't matter if the protagonist lives, because his or her story is finished. Secondly, comics are written for an older people. Comics are written for kids, teens and adults. Graphic novels are for late teens and and adults. That means a more mature story.
