Such a shitty book.
Protip: you're not supposed to like the main character
The book sucks. It's the most pointless thing I've ever read and tried to be deep and philosophical but failed miserably.
LOL

confirmed to not understand what the book is about. It's not trying to be philosophical in any way, Holden is the faux a intellectual one. The book solely exists as a character study. It's not trying to prove a point or push a philosophy, it's just an exploration of a character. All of Salinger's books are like that.

A character study?

He didn't go through any type of transformation or anything for there to study. It's not a book about someone's day to day either, so it's not a study of a character that isn't supposed to have gone through something. It's in fact very clearly categorized as a "coming of age" novel, but he doesn't really change or mature or anything.

It's basically the author ranting about things and complaining about life through a character.
You're an idiot. Disregarding the fact that you can easily have a character study of a static character, Holden definitely changes in subtle ways throughout the book. It's not a coming of age novel, by the way.

Maybe actually read the book, and not just sparknotes?

Just like Bioshock Infinite

LOL
BioShock Infinite wasn't trying to be deep or philosophical. It's a sci fi story that explores human traits.
lol

He starts as an egocentric, "all-knowing", hateful teenager. As it's made abundantly obvious throughout the book (which I guess you just couldn't pick up on), his philosophy and constant judgment of others is a way to preserve his own sense of self-worth and cover up how much he hates himself. In the last few chapters of the book, really as soon as his sister gets involved, the whole facade breaks down. When he abandons his plans to move away and become a deaf-mute, he's admitting to himself that the world isn't the problem in his life, he is. When he finds the "fuck you" written on the wall in the school, he internally knows that children aren't these inherently good figures who are just tainted by the world like he previously thought. After he goes to the hospital, he straight-up admits that he needs other people. And his breakdown at the carousel is a result of him trying to internalize all of these feelings that contrast with his world-hating philosophy.

Read a single Salinger article from the late 40's. He doesn't believe anything early-book Holden spouts out. That's just his character. Thinking otherwise is undiluted idiocy.
