but it's basically still nihilism--you're just conceding that, even though nothing matters, you still feel pleasant sensations, so there's no reason for you not to take advantage of that

Then I don't see how that's nihilism. Hedonists concede that pain and pleasure are what matter, not just for them, but for everyone. But since they are themselves, only their individual pain and pleasure matters to them. A nihilist would argue that neither pain nor pleasure matter at all.

Nihilism isn't that nothing matters. It's that there is no externally defined meaning. It's that you set the definition of what matters and doesn't. Hedonism is following what gives pleasure. Your grandma making you cookies because she likes the way you smile when you eat them could be said to be hedonistic.

the point is that they're not mutually exclusive--and i would argue that they are inextricably intertwined

if you can't think of a better meaning for your own life than personal pleasure, you're pretty much on the same wavelength as a nihilist, because a nihilist is going to think the same way
