inb4 PSUSports brings in more money than science, that's why. It doesn't matter if you deem science more valuable to humanity, it isn't as profitable in the short term.
If you could think properly then you'd realize that you could use the money from taxing sports into fueling science further.

You can't sit down and watch fusion research.And sports has a huge variety. Just look up a list of different sports, and you will see there is plenty of variety. And betting on breakthroughs sounds boring as fuck, and wouldn't work.
