A lot of abstract art relies on the artist's past & intentions, as well as the culture of the time -- which I know nothing about, so I appreciate it as impressive work but don't attempt to justify any price tag. And ultimately, merit doesn't usually play a huge factor in high-ticket art pieces anyway.

duchamp WAS a very talented and already established cubism artist though, and im sure other "talentless" abstract modern artists were very capable as well

These people are talented, I've seen Pollock's (however you spell it) sketches of people, an they're very good. But then he goes and makes lavender bullshit and people think it's the best thing ever, when all it looks like is a messy smock
