i hope that lightsaber is supposed to be as impractical as it looks. some Sith badass just going around wrecking faces with a claymore lightsaber sounds like my idea of a good time. that shot of the MilFalcon and the x wings flying across the water... ooh, baby

There's a theory floating around on reddit that the guards on the light saber aren't guards at all, but vents. This would be caused by the character not having received formal training and is basically using a makeshift light saber, which wouldn't be as sophisticated as a real one. This would also explain the different visual effect and sound, and that a sound of a regular light saber could be heard in the end.

This is purely IMO, but Star Wars was never about the flashiest shit, how many explosions there were, or "cool" things. It was about driving a hero's story. Even if this is just a teaser, it gives me the feeling that it doesn't really care about story and just wants to show cool Star Wars-y things.

The objective of a trailer, be it full or teaser, is to make you hyped for the movie and WANT to go see it.
