Are there reasons for using a horse in the city that outweigh the convenience of other modes of transportation as an officer?
Even if one doesn't sympathize with the horse this is a relevant question broached by this guy.

And here I thought officers were intimidating enough with their weapons. I don't know how (or if) these horses are trained for trotting around the city, but typical horses are pretty easy to spook. This doesn't bode well for the safety of the animal or the officer. You don't necessarily even have to steal the horse to limit that officer's mobility.

They are trained not to spook, end of that. Either by training and exposing to loud noises, imitating gunfire, slightly tougher then the usual 'breaking' in for a horse. just like any training, be it human, dog or horse it has to make them tough (at least you can teach animals that)

This is a stupid argument to make because you seem to forget there are/were war horses. Trained to not get frightened by loud noises or to be intimidated easily.

Considering I was being cheeky with the first sentence I can see how it wouldn't be interpreted as an argument. Towards the rest of the argument yeah, that was a pretty silly oversight.

My family owns a ranch, and we have horses.

It's very unhealthy for a horse to travel on rocky terrain without shoes, and the damage can even lead to the horse requiring amputation to survive, at which point the horse will be killed anyway.

The bit is not necessary to ride a horse, however in an environment where you need concise control, say when herding cattle, or navigating NYC's traffic it is the safest thing for rider and horse.

Finally, he's riding a horse because it allows him to patrol central park with more mobility than a bicycle would allow, and the horse needs the exercise to remain healthy. Exercise it would not get in NYC with a rider.
