Old topic I know, but I personally think it's a bit to early to make the call and that The Force Awakens was merely an introduction, and they already planned to have his better development in 8. And I massively doubt she's supposed to serve as some kind of self insert for Abrams.
I could be wrong  though and they could have intentionally wrote her to be retardedly perfect to appease SJWs and "muh stronk womyn" without any care to write a truly compelling  character without anime levels of obnoxious plot armor.

What are you guys thoughts?

You put Muhammad Ali to shame with that reach of yours

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
I mean, she wasn't THAT bad, but her miraculous escape was kind of like... yeah, okay, why is this random ass broad suddenly a master of force persuasion?

Her unfersher powers was a bit early.

Luke had to go on training. She just intuitively knew how to do shit.

Either she is a Jedi of exceptional power, or her character suffers from lazy writing.

I just put that in there because I see people spouting it everywhere online these days.

The latter, unfortunately. The movie is rife with lazy, shitty writing, plot holes, bad pacing, etc

I neither fear, nor despise.

Didn't work on her first attempt, and stormtroopers are easy to do that to. Now pulling a mind trick on a toydarian.....that would have been bullshit.

I can't argue with that.

Sadly, most movies suffer from this.

She fits pretty much all of the requirements.

I'm sure it wasn't intentional. I thought all of the new characters were weak except Kylo Ren.

They'll probably try to fix it in the sequels anyways.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
She was eh. Hoping she's not Luke's daughter, though. Much prefer the theory that she's a descendant of Obi-wan.

She was really the only thing I didn't enjoy about the movie, aside from the "funny" start to Poe's interrogation. Everything revolved around her, but her character is just a mess of "I'm great at everything" and some barely touched upon but incredibly contrived abandonment issues.

Finn was fantastic, though. If they dropped Rey and kept him as the primary protagonist I would have no complaints whatsoever.

Yeah, she is pretty Mary Sue, but Luke was Gary Stue as fuck in the OT so I fail to see why it's a problem. Especially since Anakin wasn't a Gary Stue and look how much he was loved in the Prequels....

Eh. I just never found her interesting in the slightest. She really wasn't that likeable - not dislikeable either, but she never did anything that made me care about the character or want to know more.

Within like 5 minutes of being given a lightsaber he was blocking blaster bolts blindfolded. And within the same day of learning about the force he guided a torpedo down a tiny exhaust port and destroyed the Death Star.

Jedi are just good at shit.

Not at all. Luke wasn't anywhere near invincible or all powerful. He was constantly being saved by just about everyone, and he got his ass kicked in Episode 5 three times. It was his own hubris and recklessness that cost him his arm, especially after both Yoda and Obi-Wan told him not to go. He wasn't strong enough to beat Vader. Something like that wouldn't happen with a Gary Stu Character.
If you want to see a Gary Stu with a lightsaber, Sword Art Online is free on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

And Anikin not being a Gary Stu does not exempt him from being poorly written.

I like Rey a lot and don't consider her to be a Mary Sue.

Also, can the term "Gary Stu" die? Men can be Mary Sues too.

I agree, I never said he was exempt. Also I liked the comment on Shit Art Online.

And let's look at Luke's accomplishments in comparison. He's the best pilot for the Alliance despite having never flown an X-Wing into battle before. He can use the Force after just learning of it that day to blow up the Death Star. Even though he lost to Vader, he proved a point to Yoda and Ben that was capable of handling fighting a Sith on his own. He comes back in Return of The Jedi with all this new skill and power without ever showing us how he got to that point. He needed fuck all training after his duel with Vader and he somehow is able to stand perfectly toe to toe with him.

A flaw isn't really a flaw for a Gary Stue if it's shown in a positive light and every flaw with luke turned out to be a good thing in the end.

And Anikin not being a Gary Stu does not exempt him from being poorly written.

Luke didn't really prove his point to Yoda. He was not even close to Vader's level and most certany was not able to go toe to toe with him. (Vader was toying with him throughout that fight and Luke couldn't do shit once Vader started hurling things at him with the force) Yoda even said he was still foolish for going to fight Vader when he did.
Luke's growth between the movies was explained fully before but the material got de-canonized with disney's buyout. But the fact remains that long periods of time separate each of the movies. 3 Years between 4 and 5 and ONe more year until Six.
I wont deny that there are parts of Luke's character that aren't properly developed or explained, but having a few of those aspects does not make him a Mary Sue.

None of the movies ever say this.

When is it ever established that this is an implausible feat for a jedi?

They imply it by the fact that he was the only one capable of weathering the trench run.

All the training they had to go through as a Padawan just to use the force on a decent level, even Anakin needed training, what makes his son so special?

But he lost.....
And survived, Yoda and Ben were practically assuming he was gonna he sent to the emperor. They didn't trust Luke to somehow escape.

OP wants me to reference the books, but the fact of the matter is for his argument is that you shouldn't have to use external source material outside the story to understand it. As with your argument, what the Hell am I paying this movie ticket for if they aren't going to imagine for me?

Quote
What?
He barely escapes his first duel with Vader, the biggest threat in the Galaxy next to the Emperor, and he derps away for a year and suddenly he's Vader's equal in VI?

Quote
How?
The only flaw I can think of is rushing in to fight Vader in V, but it turned out it was a good thing story wise since he saved almost all of his friends, learned the truth of his family, and proved he was stronger than both Ben/Yoda and Vader thought he was.

He only survived because Han Solo destroyed the TIE fighters on his back.

Anakin destroyed a trade federation ship, without any training in the force or in flying, on accident...

And he only escaped because Leia saves him.

So you'd rather them show more training that we already saw in Episode V, only so we can see him mastering it now, instead of us just being told that's what happens? Even if that were the case, I hardly see how it can be used to prove he's a Mary Sue.

He was training for that entire year and Lucas has said that Luke is the most powerful jedi.

He doesn't save his friends though, Lando did. While Luke's choices don't get anyone killed or anything like that, I can't think of a mistake he makes that conveniently moves the plot forward like Rey opening the cages of monsters which only kill the bad guys and lets them escape.
