The same reason Lucas didn't do 5, and the same reason Irvin Kershner didn't do episode 6.

I neither fear, nor despise.
I'm curious as to how Rian Johnson is going to handle the direction of Star Wars Ep. VIII.
Very well hopefully.

Lets just hope it's not "The Empire Strikes Back 2.0"
That's the main trick right now.
Keep the train rolling from 7 but keep it off the OT rails.

But thats another critic issue I have with Ep. 7, it's literally a new hope 2.0, thats not being original at all, why couldn't they do something different? "Oh but the prequels did it different" thats called taking a new approach, its not bad if its done right. The prequels did an awful job (well minus Ep. 3, decent but not great) is because of George Lucas, if it was a different director (like J.J Abram) to direct the prequels with better writing and story, then my complaint for the prequels will be wiped away. There are times where taking a different approach isn't necessary, however sometimes taking a different approach isn't the main issue, it's how you handle it.
Yea I agree. Strange that J.J. isn't doing the next one though.

Probably trying to make each film as good as they can, while also getting development started as early as possible. Episode VIII will start filming in January, if JJ was directing that movie it would take another 3 years to get it done.

Distribute the work load, give enough time for development, and allow different interpretations be given because of new directors.

VII wasn't even A New Hope 2.0, it was OT 2.0; it had many elements from the whole trilogy. ANH was itself a pretty standard hero's journey story, so it's not hard to see repeated elements in the Star Wars universe.

Also, is there any idea if those five planets destroyed by Starkiller were important, or were they just a demonstration target?

No clue

The main complaint with that movie (I loved it) was the lack of exposition. I hope episode 8 explains a few things. The strength of the Alliance, the New Order, the planets, and various other things.

Seriously, it lacked that, but I can see why since this movie was basically establishing a lot of things

Well the OT never discussed any of that, either, and the exposition they had (every conversation between Han and Leia was pure exposition) was pretty forced.

They probably weren't Coruscant or something majorly important since they didn't target the Resistance's base first. That's what they targeted near the end.

But destroying 5 planets is a pretty big fucking deal.

I wouldn't say forced, but yeah.

Uhh, hoping it'll explain more. I mean, we didn't get much in New Hope either other than "strong empire vs weak rebels" really. Episode 5 is what really established almost all of the characters.

Completely goes against the motions he did. Didn't you catch how even when he was dying he still cupped his sons cheek gently?

He still loved him, just like Obi-Wan still loved Vader somewhat when he 'killed' him (I still don't get that crap). It'll obviously play a huge part of his character in the coming movies.

For some reason that particular motion really got to me.
It was... powerful.

It goes to show that physical acts can be far more powerful than just words. If he said something like "I still love you" it wouldn't have been as powerful.

It's the same reason I can't stand episode 2's love story because all they say is "I love you" over and over without really showing how they feel for each other (no those corny dates do not count). Like Lucas was thinking "if they keep saying it, the audience will know it", while disregarding so many other things that could have been done to better flow with the movie. They do sort of in the beginning, but then just nope.

I was not moved by that scene at all. Maybe it's just because I knew what was going to happen, but I mean, anyone with a brain could've seen what was going to happen as soon as Han yelled "Ben!"

It actually felt kind of cheesy, tbh. I'm seeing it again in IMAX on Friday so maybe I'll appreciate it more then.

I know he tried to save his son and all that, but Han Solo could have went out differently. Failed to save his son, then gave his life to save his friends.

At the end of the day, I'm just happy real sets are back. There was so much CGI in the prequels that it hurt.

It was symbolic that he was casting away any light/doubt he had in him and was taking his leap into the Dark Side.

Without it, it'd be like Anakin who was just pouting the whole time... Well, no not really. They showed his anger and emotions far better than Anakin ever did.

The movie was a huge disappointment. Too many plot holes, bad writing, some shitty characters, inconsistencies, and totally Disney-fied to the point it doesn't even feel like Star Wars.
The originals had more of a Disney feel to them than the new one did. Dunno how the new characters were that bad either really, and the writing wasn't terrible. It was basically a soft reboot to get things back to normal. I don't even know what that means "Disney-fied".

The movie was bad for many reasons, too many which I care to explain at this time. But I will explain in thorough detail why it's bad later.

But sure, since it's sharing time say the biggest one for you.

I dunno about "biggest", I haven't really thought about it all too much. I can give you a few, though.

In The Phantom Menace, at Qui-Gon's funeral, where Windu and Yoda are talking about the Sith. "There are always two. But which one did we kill -- the Master, or the apprentice?" As the camera ominously pans over Palpatine. THE most powerful scene in the movie.

In Revenge of the Sith, when Vader screams "NO!". Visually, it's the most intense moment of the prequels. As someone who has watched the entire movie without sound, seeing that unfold without the ridiculous scream was just heartbreaking.

In A New Hope, just after Luke fires the missiles into the Death Star's exhaust port. There's a good 5-15 seconds of pure music, leading up to the final explosion of the Death Star. Beautifully presented. Followed by a moment of pure euphoria as Han runs up to Luke and the two give the most brotherly hug of happiness ever. Brings me to tears.

In Empire Strikes Back. This one should be obvious. "I love you." "I know." This might actually be the most powerful moment, now that I think about it.

And finally, in Return of the Jedi, when Vader is taunting Luke on the Death Star. He brings up Leia, and Luke just loses it. His pure, unadulterated anger as he mindlessly swings and slams his saber into Vader's, paired with William's brilliant score. You can just feel the Dark Side winning. And then finally, Vader falls, and loses his arm. Luke sees the prosthetic limb, and as he looks at his own, he's reminded what he's fighting for. "You failed, your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."

Just off the top of my head. Notice how there's nothing from Attack of the Clones, AKA the worst movie.

Spot on with all of these. I would say that Han dying fits right where it's supposed to here though. Right after the OT moments.

I wouldn't even say Han dying was the most powerful moment of The Force Awakens. I struggle to think of any moment where I was like "Wow."

But a few close ones would be when Rey flips the Falcon upside-down so Finn's broken turret can accurately hit the TIE Fighter on Jakku.

Another one would be when Rey resists Kylo's Force-mind-reading and turns it on itself. "You're afraid of not being Darth Vader."

Watching the film a few more times should help me have a more definitive opinion on it, though. I will say this: I've fallen back in love with Star Wars because of it, and I'm more excited to watch it again then I was to watch it for the first time.

Has anyone else noticed that Kylo's master gave him the same rite of passage Luke's did?

To kill their father.

The major difference being, Kylo did it, while Luke saved his from the dark side.

The old Jedi Order is so much like the Sith its no wonder they were blind to Sideous' rise.
