I'm just so glad the force-sensitive character was Rey and not Donkey Kong. That would've royally pissed me off.

Also, why could Rey/Finn hold their own against a trained force-user like Kilo Ren with a lightsaber?
At least for Rey - Kylo probably had emotional stress from killing Han, he'd been shot in the chest by a Bowcaster that was blowing Stormtroopers back and Finn got in a pretty decent hit. Plus experience with a melee weapon already.

I mean she basically hit a win switch when she closed her eyes and channeled the force, but I didn't find it completely unbelievable

Why are people congratulating a mary-sue (Rey) and saying it's good writing?
im curious, how do you see her as a mary sue?

I'd put money down on it being her quick grasp of the force.

Masters the force in only a few hours when it took Luke and Space Jesus three films to do it. Is also better than them when it comes to using the force seeing as she can mind trick storm troopers without even looking at them, using her hand to help her concentrate, or even being told that she can do that kind of thing. Is able to beat a trained sith despite having no training with a light saber, knows more about the millennium falcon than Han Solo, can pilot a starship better than a trained fighter pilot despite never having been offworld, has no character flaws or personality flaws, et cetera et cetera

I'm gonna chalk that point up to a little theory of her being the secret daughter of a really powerful Jedi.

I do sort of see where you're coming from but....
Anakin was also a whiny bitch who was clouded by anger (and the prequels.)

Yeah, for sure. Rey made some sense given the context of the fight.

Finn was the one I was more concerned about.

He was never given the chance to though. And in the first couple minutes of him being with Obi Wan on the Falcon he was blocking laser shots blindfolded really quickly.

something i didnt like: they tried to make ben's dumbass lightsaber seem less dumb by having him use the saber crossguards against the (even dumber) finn. no, jj, i refuse to take that lightsaber seriously, no matter how many incompetent morons get beat by it.

Blocking shots isn't even remotely comparable to beating a highly trained Sith

Finn can't hold his own against Ben. Ben smacked his shit around even after being injured. It was established early on that Rey knows how to handle herself with melee weapons; not terribly surprising that she would be able to stomp him like that, since again, Ben was injured.

Another thing is, I don't think Ben has good control over the Force. I think Rey is much more in touch with the Force at the end of the movie despite her powers being less refined. Ben's mind is clouded; his sense of purpose and Force attunement are all out of wack. Rey had a clear sense of purpose.

I'd hardly say she's "mastered" the force.

Quote
Is also better than them when it comes to using the force seeing as she can mind trick storm troopers without even looking at them, using her hand to help her concentrate, or even being told that she can do that kind of thing.

1. It is never explicitly said that you have to "wave your hand" for the force to work (I.E., A New Hope's Obi-Wan "You don't need to see our identification.") Hell, Kilo is able to use the force without any physical movement whatsoever in the first 5 minutes of the film. And I'm pretty sure blind Jedi are a thing, so not being able to see the Stormtrooper doesn't really matter.

2. "All of the stories you've heard - all of them - are true." It's possible she's heard of the "Jedi mind trick" in the past, and given her minor victory over Kilo in the previous scene, could have deduced that maybe, hey, she could pull this off. Clearly she knows she's force-sensitive, whether she's willing to verbally admit it or not.

Quote

I doubt Kilo Ren is a Sith, but yes, this is a problem I had as well. She does know her way around a melee-weapon though, and clearly she could hold her own against Kilo with the force given the torture scene. The movie sets up that wielding a lightsaber isn't really all that difficult (Finn goes to town on some stormtroopers and holds his own against Kilo), so a severely wounded and emotionally unstable Kilo Ren having a tough time against an extremely force-sensitive individual with experience in hand-to-hand combat doesn't seem entirely out of the question.

Everything else you said makes sense to me.

For some reason Ren didn't strike me as the "highly trained Sith" type.
He looked very much like Anakin when he was angry. Very emotionally driven, clouded by confusion, and incomplete as a Sith. Like hell he was even telling Snoke about his light side feelings. That indicated to me that he's far from a Sith master or even a Sith in general. If you catch my drift.

yeah i agree that was bullshit.

her first try didnt work it only worked when he was beside her, but yeah no hand movement kinda killed me. as to the 'with out ever being told' could be excused away with all the stories of jedi. plot armor all around or maybe it was JJ's way to try and escape the 'damsel in distress' trope.
Quote

an injured, unstable sith. his training was incomplete, despite being a disciple of Luke as well hence the "bring him its time to finish his training". im honestly kinda sad Finn lasted as long as he did. he's a gary-sue as well if anything. being programmed for one thing then being the abnormality.
Quote
knows more about the millennium falcon than Han Solo
"more" they said the same things at the same time, and the only time she 'showed him up' she knew about the part that had been added after he had it stolen, not the ship itself. which would make sense if she's been a scavenger most of her life.
Quote

yeah they shouldnt have made it off world without Poe, would have given him more screen time too. i liked him.

which reminds me, i didnt like Ren's whole interrogation with the Force thing. oh and Rey feeling his fear through the force was bullshit too. she got her force powers too early too often.

Not the impression I got. Yeah, Finn did lose, but it wasn't a colossal ass-beating like Sidious versus all the Jedi except Mace in Ep. 3 like I think you're trying to make it out to be. He was able to get some damage on him. That constitutes "holding your own" in my book.

Exactly. Ben is pretty much what prequels Anakin should have been like. He isn't as strong as he could be because his mind is clouded and he's driven by impulse. He didn't complete his training with Luke and Snoke has just now decided to do that himself; Ben is the weakest Sith we've seen in the movies by far, IMO.

I'd have to see it again to use specifics but it was pretty clear to me that Ben had the upper hand the entire time. Finn held him off for a bit- and again, I must stress that Ben took a blast from Chewy in his torso and was in great pain- but Finn never really stood a chance regardless.

Kylo is still much more trained, as opposed to Rey being an asspull.
