Pretty sure Luke was never explicitly tasked with killing his father like Ren was.

FUCK

Just realized a missed opportunity. Han's last words should have been "I'll see you in Hell"
Completely goes against the motions he did. Didn't you catch how even when he was dying he still cupped his sons cheek gently?

He still loved him, just like Obi-Wan still loved Vader somewhat when he 'killed' him (I still don't get that crap). It'll obviously play a huge part of his character in the coming movies.

I know he tried to save his son and all that, but Han Solo could have went out differently. Failed to save his son, then gave his life to save his friends.
Eh, I liked it. It's supposed to highlight Kylo Rens turning to the DAAARK SIIIDE
Yeah a few pages ago I explained the same thing basically
It was symbolic that he was casting away any light/doubt he had in him and was taking his leap into the Dark Side.

Without it, it'd be like Anakin who was just pouting the whole time... Well, no not really. They showed his anger and emotions far better than Anakin ever did.

I knowwwwwwwwww

I was not moved by that scene at all. Maybe it's just because I knew what was going to happen, but I mean, anyone with a brain could've seen what was going to happen as soon as Han yelled "Ben!"

It actually felt kind of cheesy, tbh. I'm seeing it again in IMAX on Friday so maybe I'll appreciate it more then.

I was expecting Han Solo to ya know......not die. So yeah I was rather surprised.
Having that part spoiled initially would really kill the moment for you. Because:

>Han Solo walking towards Dark Jedi near climax of movie

If you knew he would die, you'd expect then to be the time.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
I said this earlier but nobody replied with a response.

When Rey first touches the lightsaber and sees all the flashbacks, I swore I heard Yoda's voice say something when we see Luke put his hand on R2 in the flashback.

I don't recall that either.

Saw it, liked it. Got too pandering sometimes and Death Star 3 was pathetic. Acting and character development were good. Shots were good I don't think shaky cam was abused. Pacing was consistent. A good movie, a great Star Wars movie. I'm debating putting it above RotJ (hard to though because of the Emperor scenes). 7/10

also holy shit thd token Asian woman pilot was so fucking bad

hey
Thought it was a fantastic movie, but Rey was too much of a Mary Sue, I hope they give her more of a character and flaws in the next movies, because she's really my only gripe I can currently think of

VII wasn't even A New Hope 2.0, it was OT 2.0; it had many elements from the whole trilogy. ANH was itself a pretty standard hero's journey story, so it's not hard to see repeated elements in the Star Wars universe.

Also, is there any idea if those five planets destroyed by Starkiller were important, or were they just a demonstration target?
Apparently the planets destroyed included the New Republic's Capital, seems they chose a new planet instead of Coruscant. So the Republic's Capital and it's Fleet is gone now

Jacob Potila was actually a Jacob Flotilla of lies.- WarTurkey
http://collider.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-kylo-ren-scene-jj-abrams/

When did J.J. Abrams decide he was going to kill Han Solo? Not for a while, actually. At a WGA screening of The Force Awakens this weekend, Abrams, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, and screenwriter Michael Arndtβ€”who wrote the initial drafts of The Force Awakens before Abrams and Kasdan took over scripting dutiesβ€”participated in a Q&A (via Entertainment Weekly) where they addressed the climactic scene in which Ben Solo kills his father, Han. Kasdan began by addressing the thematic draw of the Star Wars saga as a whole:

β€œPeople always say, β€˜Why do you think this saga is so popular? I really do believe the underlying theme is recognizing your potential and understanding what you’re capable of. It doesn’t end. To understand what you’ve inherited, and what you like about that and what you don’t like about that. Have you fulfilled yourself completely β€” or is it too late. What is dormant? That’s a very real and tangible thing for people every day.”

To that end, Kylo Ren is realizing his full potential in killing his fatherβ€”it just happens to be for the Dark Side, not the Light. As Abrams tells it, he always wanted to craft a story that was as much about the evolution of the new trlogy’s villain as it was about its heroes:

β€œLong before we had this title, the idea of The Force Awakens was that this would become the evolution of not just a hero, but a villain. And not a villain who was the finished, ready-made villain, but someone who was in process.”

Abrams and Co. knew they had the looming shadow of Darth Vader hanging over their heads, so the only way they could feasibly top him was to get ambitious:

β€œStar Wars had the greatest villain in cinema history. So, how you bring a new villain into that world is a very tricky thing. We knew we needed to do something fucking bold. The only reason why Kylo Ren has any hope of being a worthy successor is because we lose one of the most beloved characters.”

But it wasn’t immediately clear that their trajectory would be leading them to the murder of Han Solo. Arndt revealed that in his initial drafts of the script, Kylo Ren was simply the wedge that forced the Original Trilogy apart following Return of the Jedi:

β€œIn my early drafts, my thinking was we had to bridge the end of Return of the Jedi to what happens in this movie, and we didn’t want everybody to start off all together. We wanted them to be spread all throughout the galaxy. We came up with a backstory that Luke had a pupil who turned against him and fought him, and killed all the other pupils, and that was a thing that exploded the family and destroyed Han and Leia’s relationship.”

In those drafts, Episode VII ended with the reconciliation between Han and Leia, but Abrams rightly pointed out that this iteration of the story made Han Solo a superfluous character:

β€œI had thought Han’s story and Leia’s story was just about them coming back together. At the end of the movie they would have reconciled and gotten over their differences. And you would have said, β€˜Okay, bad stuff happened, but at least they’re back together again. J.J. rightly asked, β€˜What is Han doing in this movie?’ If we’re not going to have something important and irreversible happen to him, then he kind of feels like luggage. He feels like this great, sexy piece of luggage you have in your movie. But he’s not really evolving. He’s not really pushing the story forward.”

As Abrams recalls, it was a tough decision to make, but ultimately the right one for the story they wanted to tell:

β€œ[Han Solo’s death is] this massive tradeoff. How can we possible do that!? But… if we hadn’t done that, the movie wouldn’t have any guts at all. It felt very dangerous.”

The killing of Han Solo acts as the full birth of Kylo Ren, with the character proving to himself that he’s destined for the Dark Side. And yet it’s followed by this tender moment with a father touching his son’s face in his final moments. It’s this and Driver’s brilliantly complex performance that gives us hope that Kylo Ren could be one of (if not the) all-time great Star Wars villains, and his patricide only complicates his story/emotions further. In this way, the return of Han Solo is fully justified and sets the stage for a fantastic trajectory in the next two sequels.

The capital is on a rotating basis, to try and make sure no planet feels pushed out like it did during the Republic days.

Assuming not all of the senators were there, they could just restart elsewhere - and likely cease assisting the Resistance, which we all know is gonna be a plot in the next film.

JJ confirmed this, I believe.

Ewan McGregor also screamed "Rey!" during that sequence.

Obi-Wan totally meant kill though, as soon as Luke said that he can't kill Vader, Obi-Wan told him then the Emperor has already won.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Kylo Ren doesn't look at all intimidating, and his ears are too big. Finn is played for jokes, and at certain points it spoiled the atmosphere of the movie. The scene where Ren and Rey get separated as the planet falls apart is also bullshit.

Other than that, I actually really enjoyed the film. The scene where they destroy all the planets in a star system, and the death of Han Solo, were both fantastic and the battles were incredibly gripping.

Overall, good 8/10.

Captain Phasma is hardly utilized - she ends up being thrown down a trash chute
We don't see her being thrown down or dying, chances are she will come back.

She was still generally pointless to the film, and could have just been kicked off until the next one when we have more time.

And then everybody would be saying "Who the fuck is this silver bitch we've never seen before?"

If they're going to be doing some development with her, at least she's already an established character. And, given that she was Finn's platoon commander or whatever, it's not as if she was totally irrelevant.

Either way, her presence didn't detract from the movie.

I would be lying if I said hadn't fantasized about this.

I very much hope Poe is gay. It would bring some much needed sexual diversity to the Star Wars Universe.

Razorfist's review. Pretty spot-on, IMO. The only thing I had a problem with was the Jedi Mind trick thing, as I've already debunked his complaint earlier in the thread.
