Just saw it and it was bad. Prometheus was fine, because it left the aliens a mystery while explaining a tiny bit of the engineers. This did the opposite.

Comes off as if people dont think theyre scary because of how they are. Id understand if it was something supernatural.

The danger the monster presents isn't the frightening part because we know it's just a movie and we're not in any real danger. The questions the viewer has about the monster are the frightening part, which means the more the viewer knows about the monster, the less scary they are. What are the aliens? Where do they come from? How are they made, and for what purpose? We don't need to know, and the horror would be ruined if we did.

Before, you had to use your imagination to think of their creation. You were limited only by what you could come up with. If you couldn't think of an explanation it only made it seem more terrifying.

Their unexplained creation never affected their status to me. Its what they are and what they do that does.

I never understood this mindset.

No it doesn't? There's good origin stories and there are bad origin stories. Just because the Xeno's history wasn't handled particularly well doesn't mean you can't do justice to others. Mysteriousness is cool and all but ultimate scariness comes down to how they're portrayed in the films. The Xeno could be a fucking dildo experiment gone wrong for all I care and it still wouldn't make them any less cool.

If it bothers people that much just pretend the first two Alien films are canon and ignore the rest. That's what I've been doing.

Saw it the other day, it was alright if I had to compare it to any of the other movies I'd say it was most comparable to 3. Too much emphasis on action and explosions like they may as well have cast Tom Cruise it would have been very fitting. Lacks the cinematography and focus on tension and atmosphere, I go into an Alien movie because I want to feel nervous, out of breath and gripped by the production it's what made the original so great and this one is absolutely lacking in that regard. Is it better than Prometheus? In a way I guess it expands on the lore much more so than any of the previous movies but like I've said that shouldn't be the focus of any Alien movie.

Aliens expanded the canon, too, and nobody had an issue with it. I don't think it would have been as big of an issue in Prometheus and Covenant if it wasn't so expository. The middle act of Covenant was just straight-up exposition about how David made the xenos. Aliens barely talked about it at all, and just built up to the queen's reveal using with tension.

One should keep in mind that the full story of the Xenomorph still isn't explained and likely wont be. We know how David has created a Xenomorph and how that would lead up to the 1979 Alien, but the murals on the wall in Prometheus show a Xenomorph meaning they were already an established being by the time of Prometheus and Covenant.

Unfortunately, Ridley Scott wants A:C to be the first of a trilogy leading directly to Alien. And the mural in Prometheus is very likely just one of the early incarnations of the Xenomorphs that we saw in that film.
