It helps us in the future for space travel, even if it's not going to benefit us right now. In the meantime, we get to learn more about the solar system we live in, understand technology working under extreme radiation, learn about Jupiter, and basically better humanity from being ignorant. I mean, it's a big feat considering the planning and time those scientists spent in this mission alone, you're young, you don't really have a grasp yet on how space exploration can help humans at this point. But in all, knowledge.

Where does he answer this?

NASA's whole deal is literally "For the benefit of all" That's their motto.
A great deal of things you take for granted in your own home have come because of the advancements made by the people looking to make human life sustainable aboard tin cans in a place where there is literally nothing to breathe. So even if the mission does not directly make your life easier, it's a worthwhile thing to do.

And it isn't NASA's job to make your life easier either. That's just a caveat of their discoveries. Their job is to make humans better and help us survive in outer space. They're not some humanitarian organization.

May not have been what I was expecting. But it was better than most of the responses.

other people answered in the same way before he posted

Bacon actually gave a more specific answer

You generally don't know- That's sort of the point of science. Exploring ideas and phenomena that didn't seem to have any appreciable effects on peoples' lives have and will continue to lead to new and practical discoveries. The entire point of science is to be curious about the world and figure out how it works. People then see what sorts of practical applications you can get out of it, but sometimes you look in areas that don't deliver, and that's okay. Maybe you do find something useful, but it doesn't actually prove itself to be useful for many hundreds of years. That's okay, too. Many people throughout history died not knowing the impact their work would have on the future.

I would never discourage curiosity because I think that's a terrible thing to do. People are curious about the universe and a lot of people find some inspiration in the sense of wonder that it carries to understand more about where we exist and how we got here. When you do things like this, you can give new knowledge to the public, and sometimes that knowledge clicks right in the minds of a group of kids and they decide they want to learn more about things, too. Maybe one gets interested in biology just at the thought of "Wow, look at what these scientists did!" and becomes a doctor, or one gets the next Nobel prize in physics. You can't know with things like this, but when you set out to learn about anything and that knowledge inspires thought, I don't think it's a bad investment.

Just if someone's looking for figures, NASA's budget accounts for less than half of a percent of federal spending (0.486%), and only about one-fifth of NASA's expenses actually go into space exploration and research. That's 0.0972% of federal spending, which is just... Really not a lot. There are other areas of government spending that I would target first if I'm going on a hunt for "Wastes of money," but that's just how I view it.

Space exploration isn't the most practical thing in the world, I know that (At least, not yet). But I do get upset when people try to pass it off as a total waste of money that has no benefits at all. That's just not true, if you ask me.

Are you implying that he's too young to understand that if we learn about the universe we can avoid dangers? Because if it's about space exploration for the sake of adventure and humanity living on other planets then I have to remind you that kids love that idea. Kids can also understand that Earth is gonna be full and unsustainable, and that populating other planets will help. No, what the hell are you talking about? What is he too young to understand?

We're learning about how our solar system was formed, refining models of how the planet is composed, and improving space exploration techniques.

Pip is just ignorant on the subject, doing missions like this to Jupiter or other celestial bodies does help us indirectly and directly. We gain knowledge of our neighborhood, understand technology to survive in harsh environments for future missions, and develop some tech to travel space. I don't expect him to learn about everything space, but we're trying to give him am open mind in this subject. Yes, it makes sense he thinks it's a waste of time, but helping him understand the benefits of this is good. I might've seemed like an ass saying he's too young, but I'm just sleepy when reading this thread.

Have you played LA Noire? Pip is Phelps during the war. A stubborn and narrow-minded fool who doesn't choose to do what's reasonable, but instead what he believes in. Instead of adapting he clings onto how he thinks things should be done, and they're bad. The ability to improve is something most beings have. What makes humans so great is our higher capacity, and if you're not gonna use it you're nothing but an animal. Only, animals don't have a choice. Pip is deliberately retarding his capacity to be smart. I have nothing but contempt for people like this.

You're being irrational. An educator is not supposed to tear down a student's knowledge and disregarding some actual answers most of your posts are just condescending.

Space exploration isn't really practical in the first place.

Chances are, humanity will remain earthbound for the rest of its existence because there's little economic reason for going past Low Earth Orbit. Sure, there are prospects of asteroid mining or other profit-driven endeavors that should eventually pay off, but the initial costs are far too great for anyone to actually risk it. Space technology also pays great dividends when eventually adapted to consumer form, but that can be done separately, and the military does the same job anyway.

Ultimately, you have to understand that most of these missions and studies are done for ideological reasons--the desire to explore, the thirst for knowledge. And that's okay; ideals are perfectly reasonable motivators, especially the noble ones. We sink plenty of money into ideals every day. But when you try to think of things from a purely practical or economic standpoint, things begin to fall apart (unless you're involved in a cold war and want to show off your missiles).

Right now, NASA is mainly focusing on planetary science--the study of planets and their formation. If you're a planetary scientist looking to learn more, Jupiter is a pretty good target. It seems to be one of the first planets to have formed, and we've still got quite a few questions about its internal composition.

I'm not gonna act like I'm above him. I'm just ahead of him. We're about the same age him and I, and to act like I'm a teacher who cares about his well being isn't how I do things. To me, that'd be a type of arrogance that I can't get behind. It'd be a hidden arrogance. I'd rather have open arrogance because then people can prove me wrong.

Being calm doesn't really mean anything, does it? If he's asking us for an explanation then of course he's not gonna be aggressive about it.

but I'm not referring to the OP. I'm referring to him saying that there's no point in sending Juno.

If I calmly say that niggers are a waste of air, do you think that that somehow makes it okay in the eyes of everyone? You think that people are gonna think "Oh yeah, but he said it calmly so it's okay"? Fuck your "calmly".

While I don't agree with it, his OP represents a pretty valid point of view, when it comes to resource allocation.  It's fair that people don't appreciate space-exploration.  But your initial response is to attack his intelligence.  He then backs his PoV up (once again, simply asking a question (NOT stubbornly asserting his beliefs on anyone) that welcomes debate), and you respond with a defensive and condescending "who do you think you are?" post.

So an appropriate analogy would be responding to conservatives with "who the fuck do you think you are?  The president?" in threads covering politics and economics, as if their perspectives and belief systems are 100% invalidated by yours.

But then you decide to preach about the importance of open-mindedness through observing other perspectives?  Yeahok.  I can't tell if you're just being ironic.  His posts made zero judgement, and simply asked for other points of view to challenge his own, and your response is to keep quiet to listen to people "who've got their hearts open"?  How open-minded of you.

Stopped reading after the first quote in the second paragraph.

You clearly don't understand the situation. I'm beginning to think that you have mild autism by how little you understand humans, but that could also be because of a lack of being around normal people.

If I ask the following question, would you consider it a legitimate question? "Why haven't we exterminated all jews yet?"

If you're sane you'll say no, and that's what I was able to "read". If you aren't autistic you'd also be able to get the same vibe. The question clearly has more going on in the background than what would appear if you were a robot.

Please stop displaying so much autism around me.

There lies more beyond the words spoken. Sometimes answers aren't the right or true answers. Why should I read what you have to say if you're going off on a tangent? If we're gonna be pragmatic, then let's ignore the small details and try to fully understand each other. Of course if I wanted to understand you I'd have read it, but let's be real, you're the one who has a problem with me, so you're the only one caring. I'm kind enough to respond, but I'm not gonna get inside your head, because frankly I don't respect you, and doing so would be a bit discomforting. It'd be like going inside a slob's room.
