Good movie dragged down by it's need to recreate A New Hope and a weak main character (Rey).

Doesn't help that Ridley's performance was amazing. The film should've just been about Po Dameron and Finn, really. Both were far more interesting characters and the dynamic going on between them never really got explored much.

Also, where does Rey even learn the force? It's like she finds out it exists and isn't just a fairy tale, then all of a sudden she's just an expert using it and a lightsaber. No training or anything.

Luke in Ep 4 blocked a few blaster shots from that training ball thing and used the Force to help him destroy the Death Star when he barely had any training at all.

At least he got taught to use a lightsaber. And even then, it took him like, three years of training before he was able to fight an experienced bladesman and not get utterly destroyed.

My problem, however, comes from how she's in captivity and just decides to try a mind trick. Despite only having found out the force existed about twenty minutes ago, she just decides to use a mind trick on the off-chance it happens to work. Luke had to be told by kenobi to trust in the force. If the spooky ghost didn't talk to him, he'd have just used his computer.

I hope Johnny Exposition comes in to explain some things with the New Order and New Republic. Next to nothing is known and while I know the New Order is the Empire renamed (they still had a shit ton of weapons and resources. The Empire didn't just fall after the Emperor did. That's not how it works), I'd like some small history behind it, along with how powerful the New Republic is. Feels like they're just the same Rebels again.

But we have 3 films. I felt it played it safe one too many times, but the groundworks for Ren and Kylo both starting out shit and getting more powerful will be great. Kylo was basically what Anakin should have been throughout all of the prequels. They handled his struggles and emotions better in one movie than Anakin in 2. Looking forward to him coming into his own in episode 5/6 since he'll be turning into a bad ass.

Overall a 7/10. It had that "Star Wars" feel again because it was actually an adventure once again and not just people TALKING about bad things for a few hours and walking everywhere (seriously, in episode 3 when they found out Palpatine was Sidious, they just walked there).

Solid movie but the hype killed it for me. Played it a bit safe at times, but it needed to in order to introduce an array of new characters in the space of a couple hours. Overall 7.5/10. Third best in the franchise.

Interested to see how Finn plays into all this in the future films too. I hope he isn't just comic relief for the entire trilogy.

It's implied that Rey is far more in tune with the force than Kylo is. Not to mention that Kylo had just killed off a character that had been close to him, distorting his focus over the force or whatever.

He'd been unstable most of the movie anyway, and it's shown that power falters in the Force when that happens.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I thought it was good, but the Empire have really got to stop building massive spheres of death that can be stopped by a single attack on a weakspot. There were a lot of minor references to the older episodes, some which I liked (Gonk droids, old alien characters re-appearing) but I thought some were a bit forced. I get it, I'm watching a Star Wars sequel, I don't need hints of the past to remember that.

Very noteworthy is that the trailers didn't spoil anything, which considering how many were released is quite a feat. Also, found out afterwards that the island with Mark Hamil on it is off the coast of Galway, and my Uncle had to monitor them filming.

Overall I thought it was great, and I will certainly watch the next one to see how that turns out, though as many have said it does play out as  A New Hope 2.0.

Pretty damn good, feels a lot like A New Hope which isn't great, but it's really enjoyable to watch. Also I really want to see the future for Kylo Ren

But I guess in the end -- Sort of feels like everyday its harder to stay happy where you are. There are all these ways to look through the fence into your neighbor's yard.

Why even risk it? its safer to stay distant.
7/10

Brilliant film.

Daily reminder that post-Republic Jedi don't receive lightsaber training, their skills with the weapon are directly tied to their strength with the force.

Daily reminder that Daisy Ridley is just discount Hayley Atwell.

-Where are the Y-Wing bombers, the fleets and other spacecraft? Sending one squadron of X-Wings to take on multiple star destroyers, wings of TIE fighters and a fucking planet thing seems way too much like putting all the eggs in one basket.
-Honestly, the film never really slows down to explain anything. Like how powerful the First Order and Republic are. I really hope them and the resistance aren't played out as rebels and empire 2.0 but I feel they are
yeah they were like "oh they shot down two of our x-wings, thats half our fleet" there was a "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN HALF?" moment.

Well in the first scene where Finn sees Rey she's kicking ass with a staff, so she's obviously skilled in staff combat... A lightsaber is just a shorter staff... and she was really clumsy at first, but then she focused on the force and then she kicked ass. However, I feel like Ren would have killed her if it wasn't for the earthquake that split the earth.

I think that as a standalone film it's the finest Star Wars yet; but my childhood tells me the Empire Strikes Back is still better-but just barely, because TFA is just so  good. Bar one or two minor niggles, but hey, it's Star Wars-not a documentary

TFA is an ANH clone, and ANH is better for it. It isn't tied down by any legacy like TFA is.

Empire is the best one, still. By far.

Return of the Jedi is just barely a better movie.

She wasn't an expert but neither was Kylo. He had no one to train or practice with in a long time.

Ok, there are some faults. Like the current political situation not being explored, etc...but we didn't get another Phantom Menace. We got something better than all of the prequels, and a reason to be excited for Star Wars again and its future. You come out of the theater wanting more and wanting to know what happens. Think of how you felt after seeing that ending scene. Did it not give you hope for where the franchise could go and what's to come?

No, it didn't. The movie was a paint by numbers of a movie (A New Hope) that I rank as average in terms of movie experiences. Hell, I'd rank RoTS even, if not slightly better, than this one.

Star Wars has always been a mediocre franchise to me to be quite honest.

One of those movies that I loved going out of it but loses some of it's appeal the more I think about it. I was skeptical about Starkiller base as soon as I heard about it and it seems my concerns were completely justified. I can't even imagine what was going through the screenwriters minds when they decided to add another death star-type plot device that destroys some unimportant planets and then gets destroyed in the end like the plot of the original. If the base had any sort of actual impact on the series or had been scrapped entirely, I think the film would have been much better.
