that's not what fracking is

They're digging below the water table into layers of shale and other rocks like that, injecting water, and letting the pressure fracture the shale and extract natural gas.

Fracking is really a controversial topic. Some people say it is horrible method that causes the pollution and poisoning of the groundwater supply.

The process fracking  or Hydraulic Fracking, was documented to be first used in 1947 in the US, and first application of it after early experimentation was in 1949. The process, is basically pumping liquids that include a multitude of chemicals from water, gas, oil, etc. These are pumped at pressure higher than the pressure that the rocks form. Thus causing cracks in the ground and open up routes for the resource to be pumped out. Igniting the pumped formula can also help open the passage to allow the resource to come out from.

Although the chemical admixtures that are included into the formula usually is less than 1% the seepage of the pumped formula can be up to 70% if not monitored. This could result into the poisoning of groundwater basin.

Though supporters of both sides, from those saying the threat and damage caused to environment by these processes is minimal if not insignificant to activists or environmentalist claiming the usage of this method poisons groundwater, the truth may be closer to the center. To better understand the process it would be best if one goes through the many of studies published by critically acclaimed journals. And look through the studies available on Google Scholar.
