i'm gonna need someone to explain why this film gained such a big cult following

i thought it was mostly boring with a few cool moments, namely rutger hauer's monologue at the end, but that performance was the only thing that really stood out to me about the film

i think i'm just kind of sick of all these pseudo-philosophical romps that try to question what it means to be human, but barely go beyond a surface level understanding of the question—though perhaps i can forgive this one slightly, given that the story was written in the late 60s—but still, how many times has this story been written and how many more times does it NEED to be written

i don't like harrison ford that much in general, and the stupid expression he has throughout the entire movie where he stares blankly at shit with his mouth agape constantly was starting to make me crack up

at least until that weird, borderline rapey scene with sean young happened? did that need to be in the movie? was the movie trying to make me like harrison ford's character less, or can harrison "womanizer" ford get away with any kind of romance scene he wants, no matter how uncomfortable it is

i also found it visually displeasing, but not in a cool way

i tend to enjoy slow-paced cyberpunk movies, but when it comes to the one everyone points to, i wasn't impressed

that said, i do feel prepared now to see blade runner 2049, which was the only reason i watched this

hopefully that's much better

It's one of those movies that someone basically has to tell you why to like it. I saw it when I was about 15 and never thought about it again. I was planning on watching it again but haven't had much will to tbh for all the reasons you mentioned. I think it's mostly due to the fact that some of the elements like the effects and themes were revolutionary at the time but it's so common in 2017, that it's not enough for a lacking story to piggy back off of (Ghost in the Shell) anymore.

Yeah I commented how it was very rapey looking too. But then I remember the context of the time it was in and you know the man being DOMINANT and all that stupid shit. 80's man, was a weird time.

I hope you saw the Final Cut though and not the theatrical version, because the theatrical version has narration with Ford doing it and it just ruins the slow shots and scene set ups.

I also just finished watching it on Friday cuz I was going out later that day to see the new one. I have to appreciate the movie is what more or less set up the Cyber Punk genre, which is one of my favorite genre's ever. That's why I think I am a little more forgiving of movies that try something new and do a somewhat decent job at it.

So I just got back from it, and I'm not sure what to think.  I don't think it was a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.  But I think the three things it needed were more synth, more neon, and more subtlety.  I found it odd how some subjects/ideas were dabbled in without a straight answer like in the original, but then other times I felt like I was being beaten over the head.  I'll probably need to see it again at some point (tho I probably won't) and take notes to really get my thoughts down.  I tried to ignore modern political culture going into this, but there were a few niggling things that I still can't decide if they were done tastefully, or if it's because it's the current year.  Other than that i thought the product placement and all the chinese was funny and helped build the world a bit, but there just wasn't enough world building since a lot of the movie was very bleak, grey, and rainy.  I guess last thing of note is that I don't quite get the ending yet on the grander scale in what it means for that one "there is another" moment with the other muh stronk womyn leader.  It just didn't have that time to die moment.  But despite that, I still think the ratings it's getting are spot on and well worth a watch.

yeah, i saw the version without the narration

which was lucky, since i didn't know the original version has ford narrating

Apparently the rapey scene was supposed to be a longer scene that was a romantic build up until Deckard became more of a brutish animal as shown, but it got cut because it took too long and messed with the pacing, so it stayed out and what was a more acceptable "passionate" scene in the 80's got a rapey vibe now.

Fun fact, the weird language the police guy and the locals use is supposedly a mishmash of the most common languages on Earth as the idea was the future would be more global than national, doing away with language barriers (although English seems to exist just fine), and that the whole global warming and climate change would've forced different cultures and language groups together forcing them to get along, if they couldn't leave Earth because they were too poor/disabled. Why they decided to conglomerate in LA is anybody's guess.

On one hand you say the movie only examined the themes of sentience and artificiality at surface-level, but on the other seem to have missed the point of Deckard stopping Rachel from leaving, an interaction which is critical to that theme possibly more than any other in the film. Rachel is struggling with attraction towards Deckard, fear of being retired, and conflict about being a replicant -- none of which she should be feeling if she's just a robot as Deckard asserts. Deckard is very much an anti-hero, bordering on the story's villain, and ultimately the scene co-opts a by-the-numbers film-noir trope to examine those themes in an original way.

I'm not going to pretend the movie is one of my favorites, and it took me a few viewings to appreciate it, but I think you missed the mark on this one.

Edit: for context, the scene from the original script was a more generic version in which Deckard coaches Rachel to kiss and presumably, after the scene transitions, have sex. The final product was a lot more complex.

Yeah my friend warned me before I watched. It also added the unicorn dream which is a pretty big thing.

Yeah I get WHY they acted the way they did and the impact behind it.

I'm just saying how it VISUALLY looked was just very rapey.

that the entire revolution plot came out of nowhere and didn't really add anything to the story except a way to tell K that he isn't Rachel's son. Apparently they all believed they could be the child, but none of them thought to look for whomever created and implanted that memory, which would have immediately led them to her like it did for K. Overall, that was just a really hamfisted way to tell the audience that everything isn't completely fucked for the replicants, which really hadn't been addressed at all.

Maybe it's left as a precursor to another Bladerunner film? Wallace still exists, he can keep making replicants (albeit not reproduce), and other replicants will keep learning of the miracle.

i thought the bright lights and colors in the city mixed poorly with the dark and gritty everything else, and even though i'm well-aware that it's neo-noir, i found myself distracted and bothered by the fact that it's constantly raining, which is just silly

The bright lights and colors are supposed to be showing how oriented the population is to advertisements (if you've ever seen Minority Report it's a similar thing). It's dark and gritty and sleazy but with a very transparent facade that everything is great.

The constant rain is from climate change / global warming. It's also why the city is so diverse. Many people and to flock to smaller areas in order to survive.
