By "best character", I don't mean that he's a good guy. Joffrey barely appears in the show, yet everyone who watches it hates him. He is so efficiently hateable it's ridiculous. It's down to both a great acting performance by Jack Gleeson, and a well written character by GRRM.
And a lot of the gritty shit that makes the show what it is comes from his character. Had

Ned Stark not been beheaded at the end of season 1
the show would be completely different. And honestly, probably kinda shitty.
