I don't think the cynical approach would even be necessary as an alternative. In the context of the show their attraction is sensible if you believe attraction can be catalyzed by proximity over a long stretch of time. Sure, they can relate to each other given their circumstances as fighters and heroic type characters; that could form the basis of a more substantial romantic relationship. I don't think there's enough dialogue between the two to flesh out that connection. We can make it as observers, but that makes their relationship seem more like a necessity carried by the visuals as opposed to the writing.

Wouldn't this have the makings for a static character? Like, if he remained alone and didn't form an actual relationship and finally get over his solitude he wouldn't learn anything?

I hated that they dedicated an entire episode to it, but I wouldn't have had an issue if it was more subtle. Their relationship on the whole makes sense... Just not the way they executed it.

I don't like the idea of romance at all in this show for reasons similar to Verb, but what made it really intolerable to me was the execution as you stated. I also think their relationship makes sense, even though I personally dislike it.

I would have preferred them to be platonic friends. The vibe I got from episodes prior to 6 was a Master/Apprentice relationship, which fits the show as a whole a lot better.
