His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
As I feared, the blood is slightly off-putting just because it's literally never been present before. It just comes off a little fan-fictiony, like when people write swears in the dialogue of characters who never actually swear in the source material? It's a little distracting, but whatever.
It's more minimal than the oil in previous seasons, though. The gore is basically non-existent as well. Overall, it's obvious that they're trying to handle this as delicately as possible.

Also I'm betting he doesn't even know the daughters of Aku exist. If he meets them I hope he's visibly creeped out by them
There's this great theory that I'm believing until proven otherwise that Aku knows about them, but purposely avoids them because they're too creepy

it's so funny and in character

I messed up with my previous reply; I meant to say "that would be great if true" in response to this one, and then respond to your next post with "spot on analysis friend". I accidentally only replied to the second post.

Only thing I didn't like about this episode was the wolf stuff. I thought it was far too on-the-nose, and was almost reminiscient of an amateur student art film.

Aside from that all great

there was blood in the original all the time, it happened whenever human characters were injured

of course, the blood here is much more graphic, and it's used purposely (not senselessly) to highlight the moral conflict of killing another human - you know, the plot.

Every change they've made to the series has been in service to the characters and plot, and that's far from fanfictiony

your image barely counts because those are just scratches--it's not dripping or anything

it's still inconsistent and jarring

god I hate nitpicks

Jack has never been faced with a human dying at his hands before, so there's never been graphic blood before. That's the opposite of inconsistent. It would be inconsistent if robots started spewing blood or Aku started sending human assassins after Jack.

is this a route the series needed to go in in the first place

Complain about THAT in your initial post - "I don't like where they took the plot this season". Don't turn me off from any legitimate criticisms you might have by whining about something so banal and necessary.

except the blood is symbolic of that direction they took, and it serves as a focal point through which the average person (i'd suspect) would be able to glean that, if i'm not particularly into the blood, i'm not gonna be into anything else that would result in having it

like the plot direction

does jack necessarily need to be going through these conflicts, when it's so tonally inconsistent with the rest of the series, making it feel as though a fan wrote it

this shouldn't be that complicated

Jack has always been presented as a normal person. He gets scared, he gets lonely, there's an entire episode in season 3 about him giving up the fight. To say these thoughts are unprecedented or unbelievable after 50 years of constant combat honestly means you don't know shit about the show.

hokay

WHERE did i say anything about jack's thoughts, let alone how "unprecedented" i apparently think they are

i don't, by the way--you just pulled this straight out of your proboscis

i'm talking about jack's physical conflicts this season, not emotional conflicts

silly person

and even then, i'm not questioning whether it's believable--i'm questioning why it's even taking place to begin with

why did this series need jack to kill human beings for the sake of drama--is that really what the show needed

it's called tension

the daughters of aku are stronger than any threat he's faced

and yeah, he needs to kill a human because that's a plot point that's dying to be addressed. (him killing sentient robots/humans in the original series and feeling seemingly nothing over it)

not really, and it could've been done differently

the fact that they went the route they did is literally only because they're on adult swim now, so they can pander

there's a million different themes and plot points that were "dying" to be explored--the same could be said of all shows

that doesn't necessarily mean they have to be explored though, especially when--again--it clashes so hard with the rest of the series

if jack killed maybe two or three real humans in the original series, it would feel less jarring

I'm not sure about that; the direction of Season 5 springboards from the ending of season 4. Jack has always revolved between funny, actiony, and solemn. Given how the original run did end, I don't think the old episode format would work very well. Single issue stories are nice when there's no rush for it to end or progress. It being darker tonally is a product of when it airs and the need to provide an overarching story to follow up on the issue presented with the old finale. Given that this season is an overarching story, it's easy to understand that the darker nature of Aku's future would be more apparent regardless of the existence of blood.

Besides that, it wasn't even like the episode was drenched in blood. It was three beings (the wolf, the girl, and Jack) and it was only for a few minutes. They're keeping it honest to the feeling of the original series with the same brand of humor, art direction, and action sequences while using some of the additional elbow room that comes with a loosening of censors to do things that they were unable to do over a decade ago.

He did. The Gentleman, Boris, and Jujunga. They just weren't explicitly shown because it needed to be able to air in the afternoon and morning.

Genndy has actually addressed the bounty hunters episode, and said that in his eyes Jack didn't kill them
