That's the thing, they're registered Republicans though. They legitimately align themselves with the party, they're not strangers to the party.

They want an accurate view of what their party currently wants, by making it exclusive only to Republicans they get an accurate sampling of their voter base and who is more popular among them. Having strangers come in and vote with them skews that data, that can potentially break what the majority of the party wants.
