Simple question really to those who know about Star Wars more than me, why apparently in the Force Awakens, has the Alliance not form a government (New Republic) after the fall of the Empire? They are still called the Resistance...how are they still a Resistance if the Empire fell? The First Order seems to fulfill the role of the Imperial Remnant from the old canon. So...why?

Because the empire was huge and compartmentalized by moffs and governors. It seems that there was a lengthy cold war following VI culminating in the creation of Starkiller Base, sparking the conflict we'll see in VII.

They could've created a continuation of the old Republic and opposed the Imperial forces as an organized and slightly bigger political body instead of the Rebel shit they still go as.

Also thank you for answering my question.

Well seeing how there was an entire nazi regime of stormtroopers I assume that the conflict didn't end

And seeing how everyone thinks that the Force and Jedi/Sith are all myths (again), I'd say something happened between then and now

The dark side of the force still exists. Just because the Empire fell doesn't mean the dark side died with it. Forming a new republic can actually cause conflict and the dark side can spread there, since governments are naturally corrupt.

Have you ever played Knights of the old republic? That's a good game.

I have not because I am a movie purist for the most part. Getting into the Star Wars Marvel comics though. Only SW game I've played was Republic Commando.

I'm hoping my answer helped. It's been a long time that I've followed any Star Wars lore, and I could be wrong about a lot of the extended lore.

Ah. I see. If you haven't read one yet that's actually pretty funny, look for Star Wars Tag and Blink. XD

hey
I'd assume that even with the Emperor and Darth Vader dead, the Empire was still a huge force and it would've taken time afterwards to beat them

You can't be wrong because the extended universe is non-canon. :3

Well, just don't say that to Star Wars fanboys. I don't because they would rip me to shreds.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Only SW game I've played was Republic Commando.

.....you've missed out on so much. Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Outcast. Geez.

Unfortunately since VII is a new story, we've got nothing to base the reasoning for The Resistance being called such on. All we can do is speculate. The First Order is something that was left of the Empire that got organized and powerful. The Resistance could for all we know even BE a New Republic, they just don't call themselves that.

I think that's what it will come down to. The New Republic is back (since the Rebellion wanted that to be the end result, democracy and freedom from an Empire). So naturally they'd make a Republic. And maybe "The Resistance" is what they call themselves only once they start fighting the First Order?

I never had any interest in the SW games. But I guess that makes sense what you said.

I'm guessing they DID make a new Republic but the Empire remnants fucked them over somehow and now they're the resistance or something.

There is a New Republic founded after RoTJ. The question is why happens in the 29 years in between it and TFA.

I'd assume the Resistance is an organization that, well, resists the First Order in the area the latter controls. The First Order likely controls a relatively small portion of the Galaxy.

Here, just read this: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Galactic_Empire

The "history" section explains everything pretty well.
