Because the empire was huge and compartmentalized by moffs and governors. It seems that there was a lengthy cold war following VI culminating in the creation of Starkiller Base, sparking the conflict we'll see in VII.
Simple question really to those who know about Star Wars more than me, why apparently in the Force Awakens, has the Alliance not form a government (New Republic) after the fall of the Empire? They are still called the Resistance...how are they still a Resistance if the Empire fell? The First Order seems to fulfill the role of the Imperial Remnant from the old canon. So...why?

So...why?The dark side of the force still exists. Just because the Empire fell doesn't mean the dark side died with it. Forming a new republic can actually cause conflict and the dark side can spread there, since governments are naturally corrupt.Have you ever played Knights of the old republic? That's a good game.

I'm hoping my answer helped. It's been a long time that I've followed any Star Wars lore, and I could be wrong about a lot of the extended lore.

I don't because they would rip me to shreds.
Only SW game I've played was Republic Commando.
Quote from: Korra on December 09, 2015, 08:06:02 PMOnly SW game I've played was Republic Commando......you've missed out on so much. Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Outcast. Geez.Unfortunately since VII is a new story, we've got nothing to base the reasoning for The Resistance being called such on. All we can do is speculate. The First Order is something that was left of the Empire that got organized and powerful. The Resistance could for all we know even BE a New Republic, they just don't call themselves that.I think that's what it will come down to. The New Republic is back (since the Rebellion wanted that to be the end result, democracy and freedom from an Empire). So naturally they'd make a Republic. And maybe "The Resistance" is what they call themselves only once they start fighting the First Order?
