My father told me tonight.

Basically he just seems lifeless now a days. Can barely walk, struggles to sit down, arthritis probably killing him. Came out at 3 AM to get some water and he was just standing there, head down. Same when my dad went to let him out around 5:30 before work like he always does.

He's been doing that for like the last month or so and walks sooooo slow, barely eating, etc.

It sucks, really it does. I've had the dog since 2005. I'm sure people here have put down an animal before. So after crying for a bit and texting a friend or two about it, I felt better as time went on. Honestly I know it's better to end his suffering instead of being selfish and keeping him around. He's not the same anymore anyway.

Dunno why I really made this thread, I rarely if ever dive into any of my personal life on here. I expect insults or something anyway. Just felt I should share. Maybe it makes me feel better? Or maybe I'm just an attention whore. Idk.

Sorry. Had to put my childhood dog down 2 years ago. Was terrible but in the end you do realize that it's for the best. No dog deserves to suffer.

That's terrible. Old, sick dogs make me so sad. I hope you're okay after this.

oh
don't put your dog down hoe.

would you put down your parents?
If they were suffering or immobile or brain dead? Absolutely. He's miserable. Why would I keep him around? To prolong the inevitable and make him stay just a few months longer? I don't want to do that.

He's 12 years old. That's on that very far end for a Labrador. He's lived a good life.

The sad thing is the last few years I've just been taking time out of my day to just lay on his stomach since he'd relax and let me. And just pet him and relax. Sleep sometimes.

I knew he was going to go soon, so I thought I'd spend as much time with him as I can. I expected his health to tank over the course of a year though. It tanked in a month and it broke my heart.

Yeah

I had two cats but both were put down without my knowledge. I was one of the driving forces for sort of orchestrating this one.

The annoying part is, for a few years after my cats went, my eyes would play tricks on me and out of the corner of my eyes I thought I'd see a cat turn a corner, and for a moment just forget they were dead.

Then get a swift reminder "oh right, they're gone". I hated that.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Really sucks when they suddenly turn for the worst. My dog got sick for a day, got better, then woke up 2 days later paralyzed.

My dog is 14, and even though he's incredibly healthy, he's probably only going to live a few more years. It's going to suck, had him sense I was a baby and he's been like a little brother/ best friend to me ever since.

14 and a few more years? That sounds... insanely long for a dog. Average lifespan is 10-13 years. What kind is he?

Well shit, I actually did that too after we lost a doxi to Lyme's. The mind is a hell of a funny thing.

In my experience, animal health declines rapidly at the end. My cat, 17 years old, was mostly fine up until the week before his death.
Everything fell to shit really fast.

10-16 for a Shih Tzu, yeah I didn't know they could live that long. Huh.

And yeah, screw my perverted and clingy mind.

I really wish I knew that ahead of time. I expected a slow decline like I said. The fact it was just a sudden jolt is what hurts. I let him outside to go to the bathroom one day and let him wander for like 30 mins. It was cold but not freezing.

My brother gets home and I ask to let him in, so he does. Comes in my room saying he was sitting at the corner of the house around the corner and he had to more or less carry him in. It's been bad ever since.

Small breeds usually have a longer predicted lifespan.

Though it's not unusual for many dogs to make the mid teens. My Grandparent's last Lab was fourteen and the one before that made it even longer.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
I'm sorry to hear about this.

One of my dogs is outside and we've had her since I was 5. She's lived a long life and her age is starting to show. I think she may be deaf because sometimes she won't even respond when I call her name or make noise to get her attention. Other than that she still eats well and moves around pretty good for her age.

My pomeranian that looks similar to this one here is 11 years old and we've had him since 2005. Like my other dog, his age is starting to show as well. My poor dog has nearly lost all of his teeth, as he only has one tooth left. Thankfully he enjoys the food we give him because of his lack of teeth and he's still the lovable dog everyone in my family loves. Losing him will hit me harder than my other dog. I honestly don't know what I'd do with my life if I lose my pomeranian.
