IIRC Stoklasa adored TFA, so this is kind of odd. I thought Plinkett reviews were only for movies he hates.

tl;dr it's "pretty good" but it wasn't sufficiently original

Pretty par for the course for Abrams' franchise-restoration.

They loved TFA, I think they're just using Plinkett to point out the noticeable flaws and, from the vibe I'm getting from this review an hour into watching it, make a joke review. Plinkett hasn't really been tearing into this as he did with the prequels.

It was mostly a critique of Star Wars as a current franchise rather than the movie itself

I skipped around because the first hour of the review is a discussion about the prequels. I believe they addressed it in the original RLM review, and IIRC they just kind of shrugged it off, but in this review it was pointed out that Finn is basically useless because Rey is already a "strong" character from the get-go.

He certainly has a mad on for Lucas. While his criticism of Lucas's work is spot on, who devotes that much energy saying how much one man sucks?
