Writer Block

Hey everyone,

Welcome back Deci,

I've been pretty busy these last 3 months with life. I remember posting at least 1 new topic a day on this site. I really do try to pick some . As a recently I've been running into writer block. For those of you who write how do you get though this?

Writing stories is mostly about putting obstacles in the protagonist's path. If you're not sure what to do next, try to think of what the worst possible thing that could happen to them given the situation would be, and write it. Then, try to work out how they'll get out of it.

Alternatively, skip ahead to what you know will happen and can put into words, and go back to that earlier part later when you've figured it out.

Do your best to create situations that don’t have simple answers, here’s an example: I was watching the goldbergs and the main character doesn’t want to swim because he doesn’t want to wear a shirt. But no one says wear a shirt when going in and rather creates a fat fiasco.
Stories get stupid fast if your main characters use the most insane answer, sure it thickens the plot but is more annoying than cool.

I was writing and coming up with my own fictional universe last year but stopped because I ran out of ideas

haven't been writing as much as i'd like to lately

i could never do that thing some people do, where they force themselves to write 1000 words a day or some shit

the last thing i wanna do is turn one of my few life passions into a job or chore

What helped me was showing my work to a friend and having them ask questions about it, since more likely than not they'll ask things that you haven't considered and don't have an immediate answer to. That's good, because those questions will give you a new perspective to help you rethink your story. Same as anywhere else, ideas in writing spring from coming up with solutions and applying them.

I think that's what writer's block boils down to, not knowing the right questions to ask yourself.

All my ideas for what I want to write are still in my head, from beginning to end. Still struggle to get them down on paper.

I'd say switch to something else and keep whatever project you're working on in the back of your mind, but that typically results in me just deleting two word files a month or two down the line instead of just one.

Take a breather and look around the area. Might just see something for inspiration. Could be something small like a fly just crawling up the wall or a drink being knocked over. Inspiration comes from the most unlikely places.
