Maybe both sides of the triangle are X so the area is X*X / 2 which is the same as 0.5X^2.

Do you need the actual proof for it? It's x^2 because the height is the same as the base.

oh, nvm what I said doesn't matter at all, turkey had it going right.

it's a 45-45-90 triangle, right? x*x=x^2, where x is the base and height. The circle has radius y, so you put in pi*y^2 for pi*r^2.
You subtract the circle from the triangle. yes
