When I was little, my family had a purebred Chow. Chow dogs run a high risk of gastric cancer because of all the inbreeding and trait selection. And that's what he died of, he was put down the day before Thanksgiving.

Currently have a Bullboxer Pit, she's just the sweetest thing. If I ever get another dog, it'll be either a pit, a boxer, or a mix of the two.

Thankfully not. He died about ten years ago.

Nearly every dog we've had beside the Chow was adopted. It's a home with food and affection vs the shelter, so I'd think that the situation is a nonchoice. Turning them loose is what probably had them end up in the pound in the first place, so a domesticated animal being set free is giving it the option between dying or being adopted.

Pets simply aren't property in a way that a table is. Moral responsibilities relate to the well-being of conscious creatures--dogs and cats included.

Well no, I'm not trying to say we should just let them all loose. That would be retarded. I have two chihuahuas--one of which gets heavy seizures very frequently because of her fucked up physiology. Ain't no way, no how she'd make it out there.

I'm just saying, we probably should have never started to own pets. Now we can't stop, because our pets are designed to be pets. It's just a little fucked up to me. All of it. Not just pure-breeding.

The only reason animals need to be taken care of is because we fucked them up. A lot of people abuse and neglect animals, which gets them in shelters. A lot of people specially breed them, which has an entire host of health risks. This has drastically reduced their capacity to survive out in the wild (if they had much a capacity to begin with... like Aria, I'm ignorant of how domestication took place, so I might just be talking shit right now).

Again, I just wanna make it clear that these thoughts aren't ironclad right now. I'm simply postulating--hence my first post.

it's usually mutually beneficial for the owner and the pet. many pets are functional- cats hunt household pests, dogs can be effective at herding or hunting, etc. the pets are therapeutic for humans, they make us happier by being in our lives. in return, we give them a warm place to sleep and live, plenty of food, medical attention, and freedom within the limits of safety (in the ideal scenario- many people abuse their pets or do not care for them properly, but the general idea is fundamentally morally sound, methinks.)
