Offshore. People around me typically equate this with the Deep Water Horizon disaster. Like, how or even why would I take a job in such an unforgiving environment?

Knowing that something wrong could happen at any moment.

A fire could errupt from one of my seperators, my booster gas compressors could explode, etc.

Truth is. It can happen.  No doubt about it. The threat is always there. That is why safety is the BIGGEST priority in my field! Making sure we adhear to BSEE standards, follow API 14C, and general common sence creates a better place.

Deep Water Horizon was a drilling platform. They have a far more grueling job than I do. I am an operator on the production platform Stampede. (As pictured above)

Out buisness, is to take the fluids from the well, that contracting drillers (Deep Water Horizon) find and prepare for us to use. We take it from the well, introduce it into a process of heating and seperation.

This is done by way of seperators, heating and cooling exchangers, treatment, sea water injection, chemical injection, etc. It is a very meticulous and detailed operation. Takes a while to understand.

In a nut shell. The fuilds seperate into: oil, gas, water. Oil is the black stuff, the gas is the invisible stuff, and water is..... water.
——————

Life offshore is like nothing youve experienced. Nothing but water for miles and miles. In the clearest blue you can possibly see. Wales, sharks, you name it; its there to see. Truely a wonderful spectacle!

You're feed like a king. 5 times a day. Snacks of what ever you want, when ever you want. Lots of people gain weight out there.

But despite all of that. The schedue is big factor for most. You work 14/14. That is 14 days at work, 14 days at home. It is tough to be away from family all of that time. But let me tell you, the payment and the time you spend at home. Is SOOOO worth it!!!

On average a new person in the field makes roughly $2,500 a week. Plus expence, benifits, etc. (Wood Group PSN pay and benifit info)

Before I start to sound like a recruiter, Ill go back to my point. Why do I do this job?

Not for the thrill, the view, or experience. But for family. No other job has givin me the time I have had with my family like this.

Sure, bad things can and will happen. No doubt. Its how you carry yourself and do your job and how you help others on the platform that will determine that.

Go to school for Process Operations, Instrumentstion. Other than that, there are mechanics, electricians, crane ops, gally hands.

Then find a company to joing. Like Wood Group, Hess, BP, Chevron, Shell, etc.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I hear the US has great insurance plans (among other things) by working offshore, even if the work schedule is strenuous, somewhat more dangerous, and different than most.

You offshore from the US or further afield? Angola, Cameroon and Nigeria are up-and-coming resources these days.

US. My platform is in the GoM.

My employer gives us the choice of what ever insurance we want. And they pay 80% of the monthly premium.

Shit that's great.

One of my lecturers taught a module on Health and Safety, and got fucking screwed over by insurance when he got in a plane crash between rigs in the 80's. Survived fine, but no insurance payout or possible claim because of some loopholes at the time.

Hope that never happens here. I could possibly be in a Helicopter crash on my way out or back.

Have to go to a water survival course for that.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
The work routine is pretty nice, I know a guy working who works in saudi arabia 30 days on 30 days off, it seems alright cuz he lives in a city for expats so the religious shit doesn't apply and he gets paid there too so no taxes.

Also surprised energy companies still pay like that with oil at like $50/barrel, hopefully won't be too shit by the time im done with my petroleum engineering degree.

What's your position in the company? I've always considered petroleum engineering after the navy because of the pay and schedule.

Either get a job in a plant somewhere and build up to it, go to school for process operating, instrumentation, or what ever. Even become a Paramedic.

Then apply, apply, apply.
