Is how naturally films had diverse casts, and didn't flaunt it in your face. It also had movies that discussed racism like 48 Hours or Beverly Hills Cop but didn't make it as an angry response to social issues but just as a plot point and discussion starter. You had strong yet also believable female lead characters like Ripley who wasn't some uber stronk mary sue that ruins the immersion of the film, just some chick caught in several clusterfuck situations.

The biggest difference between then and now is now it's like JJ ABRAMS SAYS THIS MOVIE HAS MINORITIES AND WOMEN Y'ALL ITS A MINORITY VICTORY TO BE PROUD OF, WITNESS ME

And the 1980's were like this movie has awesome special effects, aliens and Carl Weathers.

The new Star Trek movies are pretty diverse and they don't make it a selling point, then again TOS was also pretty diverse so I guess its a moot point. No one really cares about the new Star Wars cast because everyone just wants to discuss the story, which is how movies should be.

It's not just movies but also games. If you don't flaunt it everybody will praise your game by default. ME3 got a lot of gay-haters but no one batted an eye to FFXIV's open marriages.
