In all seriousness, I feel you dude.  When I moved out, I had to leave my favorite cat behind, and I guess she took me leaving the house pretty hard.  I found out around Christmas time that she wandered off and hasn't been seen since.  Shit ate me up for weeks..

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
How so? If one was to actually spend time with their cat and find ways to entertain it, that wouldn't be a problem.
Why don't you come round to my house while we're all at work and look after it, if it's so easy? I'm sure you can find a solution to the fact that we have to leave the back door open so the dog can go for a shit.

This is why you don't let your cat outside.
So they can become stressed and obese?
Better than getting run over by a car.
That's one shitty argument, mate.

Some cats just like going outside dude. I've had cats that have refused to go outside and some that practically live out there.
I understand that some cats may have already been accustomed to being outdoors from previous owners, and there isn't anything you can do to change that. But for any kitten, you should make it accustomed to being an indoors cat.

If you live in a small apartment/home they probably should be outside a fair bit but even then you should be paying close attention to your pet when it goes outside. You said you've had problems with foxes and stuff before, 1 y/o cats aren't exactly apex predators, I don't know what you expected to happen.

Are you all gone for fourteen hours or are you just bad at training dogs?

Our dog is old now. Old as in he probably has one or two years left. He used to be able to wait until we got home before he went for a shit, but nowadays he just shits in the kitchen.

I've raised multiple cats from kittenhood. Not all of them are content with just staying in the house all day. Some feel like they need a larger piece of territory for themselves and will want to go outside as a result.

They make pads specifically for situations like that, with sickly or untrained dogs, put them down in problem areas and the dog will go on them and you can just pick them up and move along usually. Doesn't require an open door. There are other solutions too. Did you try any other solutions or did you just jump right to "welp lets just let all the animals leave whenever they want since Fido likes to shit in the kitchen"

if they really want to its healthy to let them get some outside time. cats can develop neurosis or other health issues if they're cooped up when they dont want to be for too long. this is the part where context matters- how old is the cat, what kinds of predators live in the area, what kind of prey is in the area for kitty, is the cat cool with being on a leash/harness for safety's sake, etc.

Which would be the kitchen. . .

It's not exactly sanitary to have your dog shit in the kitchen, even if on a specially designed mat, nor is it easy to train him to shit somewhere else considering he has been going to the back door for his entire life.

And we still seem to be ignoring the fact that indoor cats need a lot of activity, and simply cannot be left alone for hours on end, otherwise they develop psychological and behavioural issues as well as being at higher risk for obesity.

I'm also given to understand that it's common in America to keep cats indoors; that's actually pretty rare across most of Europe. Frowned upon, even. We've raised dogs and cats for most of my life, and while our area sees the occasional fox there are numerous cats wandering the streets at all hours and mice and birds which our (restlessly young) cats love to hunt.

We don't have a door between the living room and the kitchen.

Yeah I don't get the problem with outdoors cats. They're a pretty common phenomenon around here. Keep rodents and rabbits and shit out of your gardens.

One of the cats got out a week ago (not Mordred, he's afraid of the outside). Stupid fucking squatter roommates left the back door open and Rambo got out to the backyard which is overgrown because the lawn people are fucking crooks. Took me a whole day to find him, he was stuck under the fence, couldn't even fucking see him because of all the fucking overgrown weeds. I don't mind the cats being outside, but not when the lawn people take our money and only do half their fucking job. That's the only reason I don't give them some time outdoors.

there's nothing wrong with outdoor cats its just much more likely that theyll die violently if you let them go outside without keeping an eye on them at a very young age

hell even old experienced outdoor cats can still die violently. a gorgeous huge cat in my neighborhood got mauled by an owl a few years ago. circle of life is brutal. personally id rather keep my cats indoors and chaperone them if they really need outside time than take the gamble on kitty potentially meeting something a lot stronger and meaner than it.

Maybe you've got a wanderer. Sometimes cats do that. Go away for weeks or months and then show up again.

We don't have any lawn equipment nor do I have the money to go out and get any. It's much easier to pay someone 50 bucks every two weeks then save up 200 for the needed equipment.

50 bucks to have them cut the front and the back, that's standard here. The only problem being that the people we hired seem to be lazy. We just need to find a service that isn't a bunch of lazy crooks.

Kill your self faggot

Great, now find one that also comes with a weed eater for the same price. I live paycheck to paycheck and it's easier to throw 50 bucks together than anything over 100.

I wouldn't mind torching the entire backyard TBH.

200 bucks for lawn mowing equipment?

All you need is a little gas and a lighter
