Horror movies shouldn't rely on simple jump scares and gore to be scary. Use identifiable characters, and move them from a normal, relatable scenario to the unbelievable. Instead of just jumping in. Use tension.

The 80's relied too heavily on gore for horror and muscle bound guys quipping one liners for action. It just seems like 4 out of 5 movies today are absolute shit, compared to the 2 out of 5 it was just 20 years ago.And don't get me started on all of the unnecessary remakes, reboots and sequels.
