I was lucky. Philosophy is one of those classes where you need a decent teacher. To be honest, I think moderate religious people are better disposed to teach it.

At least mine were.

To clarify my point, theists who border on agnosticism - or who are intensely open-minded - are usually the best teachers of philosophy. Teachers who actively identify themselves as an atheist (despite it not being an active position) will end up as OP-described fedora tippers.

From what I've seen of modern philosophy, people aren't interested in contemplating the nature of truth and influence so much as they are with trying to prove themselves right.
