I did quite a bit of research into ultrawide monitors recently. Honestly it's a neat idea but too few games take advantage of the increase in FOV. 16:9 are much more universal and for the price you're better off just buying two of them.

Playing games or movies on two 16:9s would suck though.

You don't play one game on two monitors, you play one game on one monitor and have YouTube open on the other monitor.

I definitely understand how its an intriguing concept but it's a waste of money to buy one ultrawide screen.

I know that, but I already have a main gaming monitor that I would play games on. I'm not too interested in 3 screens (2 of which would be relatively low quality then), so I feel like getting a larger ultrawide one would be good for the second screen.

So just buy a top tier 16:9

you really dont have to if you already have a gaming monitor tho. just get something with high dynamic colouring or something for movies and such.

Well, I'm officially torn, lol.
Ultrawide is better for work, 16:9 is better for media.

If you already have a monitor you play games on, Ultrawide may be better for you. Snapping windows to the left and right is very useful on screens of this aspect ratio, and unlike in a 16:9 screen, the windows remain very useable. Almost as wide, even, as two 4:3 monitors.

This can make playing a game, watching YouTube, and chatting with friends all simultaneously a simple task, and keep your desk free of the clutter of a third screen.

Ultimately, 21:9 offers a lot of advantages for users seeking to multitask, but little for gamers.

I already ordered an ultrawide earlier today. The 29" LG 29UM68 (IPS). Featured in all but one of the "best ultrawide monitors 2017" lists I found (and the only one that didn't have it listed in its top 5 instead featured the 34" model). It's got a response time of 5ms, an input lag of 10ms and a refresh rate of 75 hz. Those are pretty decent specs and because it has some decent gaming features (it's also marketed as a gaming monitor), it should do a fine job for any games I might want to play on it. I'm not looking for the highest refresh rates (my 144hz one takes care of any fast competitive games) or 1440p (skipping that resolution for 4k in the future), so this will be excellent for me and it comes at a great price ($250). I'll be using it as my main monitor for browsing, work and everyday tasks. My 144hz one will be used for fast games and (depending on how well I like it) the ultrawide for slower games - with the other monitor serving as an extra one in that case. I'm having it delivered on Saturday and am definitely looking forward to giving it a try.
LG tends to dominate those lists, even from reviewers who purchase their test products instead of getting them free, which is a good sign.

PC (GTX 1080, i7 7700k, 16gb RAM)

Asus VG248QE (144hz, 1ms, 24")
LG 29UM68-P (75hz, 5ms, ultrawide 29")
Sony Bravia (34" - hooked up to PC and cable TV)

Peripherals are Xbox 360 controller, Logitech G810 mechanical keyboard, G502 Proteus mouse, Sennheiser 360 Pro  headphones. Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3 are set up on the main TV in the living room.

Could do with some improvements (walls are still bare) but overall pretty satisfied with its current state.

ugh this reminds me that I need to finish moving
