Minimum wage raising is pretty bad

Working in fast food, some dollar menu items went up to 20 cents now. Like, come on you fucking retards, raising it means we'll have to fucking pay 5 dollars for a $1 cheeseburger soon. But hey, I get a raise next month from this.

There's an old bell on the countertop at my restaurant. Old metal. Rings out fuckin' sharp. You can hear it just about anywhere downstairs.

The cafe, depending, is either a 1, or 2 person job. It's a town of 800. By now, you would think that the majority who come here, know this.

So, I am sitting there, preparing something for somebody behind the counter. And somebody comes up to the till. And they see me there, working.

And they ring the bell.

I work for Starbucks and they had a company wide raise. The problem is not only did the prices increase by a few cents, but entry level baristas were making the equivalent of 1-2 year senior baristas. There's a protest against it. I wasn't really mad I had just gotten a raise so it just increased my pay further, but the do need to implement a better balance of the scales for baristas who have worked 1+ years before the pay increase.

Also I am always the one who says that minimum wage increases can create inflation, and therefore can potential do more harm than good.

The minimum wage isn't bad because it causes prices to go up (it does cause that, but not by the exorbant amount you guys say it does), it's bad because it raises the barrier to entry for people wanting to enter the workforce. It chops off the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, making the poor poorer in the process. A minimum wage doesn't indicate the minimum amount employers have to pay you, it indicates the minimum amount of work you have to put in for employers to hire you. That's why I can't just stock shelves if I want to work at Target. I also have to work the register, bring back stray buggies from the parking lot, help customers, etc. Even if I wanted to only make $4-5 an hour stocking shelves from 12:00-8:00 a.m. I can't, because the government made it illegal.

This is what basic business models do - get the fewest number of people to do the most work for the lowest wage. Every business does this. Because having more workers than you need doesn't pad your profit margins.

let's say it was legal to pay you $1.92/hr to gather the carts from the parking lot. It doesn't make sense to hire you only for that. One of two things would happen:

1 - carts can only be collected when you're working, which may mean the all of the store's carts are in the lot and customers are unhappy

or

2 - you get paid to sit on your ass until it's time to collect carts again.

neither of these options make sense for a business to do, so it's all rolled into someone else's job.

So true! Burger King is nearly as expensive now as Sonic.. I remember back in the day, we could gte three meals for less than $15.. Now you can't get two meals without it being $15.

Idk what a blue hedgehog has to do with burgers but here in Britain it's far less expensive to either cook the equivalent yourself or to go to a proper restaurant. Most areas have a Wetherspoon's now where you can get a burger meal (as in a proper quarter pounder, pile of chips, couple of onion rings, a salad (if you wish) and a drink) for £5.

For that price at a BK you could get:

It's not much of a competition, especially as that BK image is BS. You get half the fries and the burgers are thin af.

Has anyone mentioned Seatac and what happened when they boosted the minimum wage there? Cause they boosted it to like $15 an hour all at once and what happened was interesting.
