I remember having AVG and Norton installed at the same time, it's a bad idea.

MSE alone is all you need. With enough common sense plus that you will be fine.

I'm on 8.1 which has an upgraded version of MSE, but it falls under Windows defender instead.

Been running 8.1 for 2 months now. No problems.
