lots of great musicians can't read or write music--they just play it by ear

i'd like to be that cool

i'm also a little tone deaf--i don't have perfect pitch, so i couldn't hear a note and tell you what it is, let alone a chord
i don't know very many people who can do that, tbh, and if they could, i don't know why they're not all making music

i mean, i guess the best way to get into making music is to just start it up as a hobby

tinker with everything you can in FL studio and learn how everything works first before you even begin to lay down some riffs

but that requires patience--if i could just upload what i have in my head right now, i would much prefer that

i need that instant gratification

There's the struggle of playing an instrument and being able to generate melodies automatically, but not having the pitch recognition or technical skill to actually play them just from your head.

hey, i have perfect pitch.

right now i'm teaching myself to play New Order's "Elegia" on the piano. Unfortunately it requires something like 6 hands to play, so I've been recording myself playing the 3 different parts of the song. Anyone on my snapchat has seen a bit of what I have so far.

like, look at someone like Video Game Pianist. The man obviously has practiced piano his entire life, but his fucking TIMING is so bad. he has no ear for the actual music, it's actually kind of embarrassing.

Reading sheet music expedites the process, but learning by ear makes you feel like a badass. I once learned Take 5 on the Ocarina by ear over a weekend. It absorbed the better part of the weekend but I impressed my lessons teacher with it the following week. I also learned that I was off by a 1/2 step. Turns out I don't have perfect pitch either.

i've gotten along pretty well in concerts without knowing how to read music. yeah it'd probably be beneficial in the long run to learn. i just don't wanna, it's pretty sick to tell people that i taught myself to play X and i don't know how to read music.

Not if you ever want to share your ideas with others.

If I'm in a band and I want my m8s to be able to play my vision, I need to write it down for them.

Learning music by ear and creating new music is a totally different ballgame.

Sure, you don't need sheets to learn somebody else's shit, but if you want people to learn yours you better get learning to read and write.

It's simple enough a child can do it.
