Look at the quality lathe work that went into the construction of that hand guard.

I should totally turn a hand guard on a lathe for shiggles. Though I'd use Walnut and I'd give my hand guard a bit more definition.

This is the wood worker and gun enthusiast talking. I love lathe work like this. Taking a square block of wood and turning it into something nicely contoured and symmetrical. I do admit, the lines the wood worker put into that piece are a little bland. It doesn't really add much definition to the piece at all.

It really isn't. It's a simple cylinder with a few lines to add definition.

I could turn something like this in maybe 20 minutes depending on how big the block is that I start with. Lathe work is relatively easy.

If you only had a saw, a knife, and some sandpaper then it would be more impressive.

I don't see why you're going on about it being beautiful when it could easily be made in 20 minutes with the proper tools.

Because there is something about lathe turned wood that brings out the most beautiful grain. When you construct something out of flat parts, like say a cutting board or box, you only really get one aspect of the wood grain. It's always running in one direction. With a lathe you get the grain swirling and turning and looping around. Such as this pen I turned.



How ever, a lathe is difficult to use. a Beginner could not walk up and turn that hand guard. I should know, I busted three pens due to a mix of poor wood and poor form. So to someone who knows what they are doing, that hand guard would be easy and popped out in 20 minutes for the CA finish.

This is more something I'd attempt though. Three distinct sides similar to an A1 style handguard. With plunging router cuts and router cut handholds.

Not to mention the beautiful black walnut.

The stock and grip, however, were likely cut out on a band saw and hand shaped to that form. That'd be time consuming and difficult.

I don't into guns.

That looks pretty bad.
They could have at least tapered it so it doesn't look so much like the leg of a stool.
