Just seen it. Fantastic film, probably some of the best performances I've seen by Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman. As a farewell to the X-Men series for those two, it's pretty much perfect. It also does a great job of setting up future X-Men films if they decide to go that route.

Otherwise, it's great to finally get a wolverine film that doesn't hold back on the blood and violence you'd expect from such a character.

With the way they end it, I'd say they're setting up for future XMen films to have a new cast entirely and abandon the ones we've had since the first film.

I can't say I'm displeased. I associate the likes of storm and cyclops too much with the cheesier films from the original trilogy and the abomination of X3 so an opportunity to see some new characters is nice.

Seeing Wolverine die got me in the feels, especially with X-23 calling him "daddy" and that right there made me choke up. The girls sitting a couple seats away from me were actually full on crying lmao

Hate that Charles and Logan died though. Also. Rice explained they stopped the mutations occurring so no more people would be born with mutant powers but what happened to all the other mutants? Storm, Cyclops, etc... Wolverine stopped the Sentinels in Days of Future Past, but shit. This new timeline he created isn't much better. The entire population wasn't killed since the sentinels are gone, but most mutants are gone now. So it really didn't work out any better for them lol.

Since they were sort of adapting the Old Man Logan storyline, they had to keep it consistent with the comic with there being no other superheroes/X-Men. In this one it was subtly implied that Charles killed many if not all of the other X-Men during a seizure. Also I don't think this movie is supposed to be connected to DOFP. The timeline in these movies are so screwy and contradictory, you basically have to take each movie as a standalone.

The gritty realistic stuff was good, but clashed with the standard "X-Men" stuff, and made the latter feel particularly stupid.

DOFP erased everything after the 70's. This makes Apocalypse canon (80's), and elements of the main films (Logan cage fighting in canada, fight at the statue of Liberty are mentioned) canon, as well as Wolverine and the XMen having adventures that are later adapted to comics in-universe.

DOFP and thus the bit at the end where everyone is alive is set in 2023, six years before Logan. If TransiGen stopped mutant births around the early 2000's, then that means the final 'generation' of mutants is in school around '23. Xavier killed all/ most of the mutants in a seizure in 2028, leading to him, Wolverine and Calaban going to Mexico to hide.

It worked out better in the sense that everyone is still alive.

The DOFP timeline change also meant that the Origins Weapon X program got replaced with the Apocalypse Weapon X program, but the adventures Wolverine and Sabertooth had in their wars are still a thing.
