I just joined a band called Finding Solace.  Their last bassist got married and didn't have time for the band anymore, so now I'm filling in.  I'm about ten years younger than everyone else, so it was a little weird to start off, but once we got acquainted things went well.  Our lead guitarist runs a recording studio and was in charge of the mixing.  Here's a few songs we recorded:

This is just me, but it sounds like your average rock song, doesn't stand out all that much.

That's the vibe I was getting.  Like I said, I didn't have any creative input.  Couldn't do any slap solos or what have you.

Lead singer wrote the lyrics.  Everyone wrote their own parts initially and then modified them to fit together.  A lot of riffs were stripped down for the sake of simplicity.  We don't want the band to be about any single element.  This is less about trying to sound like BB or Chevelle, and more about not being like every other hard rock/metal band in the area.

Okay, before I say anything, I will say nothing I say is meant in any insulting manner, and all of it is purely my input. I am also on my like 9th loop of these songs.

You're singer is the epitome of generic. He sounds like he is directly copying the style of Ben Burley for singing. His voice, he either doesn't sound like he has any range, or he is holding back a lot. His lyrics also sound generic and even templated. It's stale.

The mixing is okay, could be better, I can hardly hear the bass at all. Drums sound somewhat faded. The guitar and vocals really overtake the song too much. No balance.

Also, I would hope you all at least write together, in which case, I would hope at least one person there has some sort of say to the direction of the song.

Simplifying riffs is just dumbshit though. Please no. You all should go all out for all your fucking songs.

Stop trying to be anything. It's nice to have a general sense of direction, but don't go overboard with controlling your sound. be natural, go with the flow, and let it take you for a ride. Force nothing.


And the last thing I want to say is, you don't have to take any of this advice, if your music, you can do whatever the fuck you want with it. It's not bad, but it's just not the best it could be to me. There is a lot of potential here.

And Break Me is your best song.
