After the Snowden revelations and new information about how US companies use personal data, the European Court of Justice annulled the previous agreement between the EU and US on the sharing of personal data because the American regime was inadequate and clearly lacking compared to the European one. A new agreement is now in the works, and the US doesn't really have a choice but to adopt and settle for European data protection standards in an indirect way.
