To be fair 90% of his allies were also dead by the end of the saiyan saga and the ones that remained were able to force Frieza into his final form before Goku even showed up.

It just feels like for the majority of DBZ's run, they were pretty irrelevant.
They simply slowed the unstoppable force down a little bit til Goku came and beat it every time.

Every time Piccolo shows up I just expect him to get stomped on.

It's also shonen. You kind of have to expect that from a show aimed at young teens.
