Both of them are pretty cute, but they each have glaring flaws; one being boring as sin and the other a total Mary Sue.

She wasn't even that cute.

I personally thought Rey was cuter in a nerdy sort of way.
My entire argument for that though is one's acting is actually so well that it transcends the rather meh writing regarding her character, where as the other one is still boring as sin.

It was one of those things where I felt something was off, but I wasn't able to articulate what I felt until I heard it.

In regards to RLM, I can respect their opinion and understand if they don't like it, but their RO Prequels review really rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like they were just shitting all over anyone who enjoyed the film

Welcome to the club, buddy.

Did anyone else find Vader's pun groan worthy? I've been trying to figure out why I basically cringed at it, when he does joke a fair amount in all the other films. So I compared some of his other jokes lines;
YouTube

to his Rogue One line (link will probably get copyright claimed);
YouTube

And I dunno, I can't really put my finger on it. I think it's because it's like a self referential joke, something a fan would say but shouldn't actually be put to film. "Wouldn't it be cool if Darth Vader thought his choking ability was totally epic and funny?" It'd be like if the Emperor made some pun about Luke finding it "shocking" how much it hurt being electrified by him

I think the problem is that JEJ emphasized "choke" in the line. If it was just "be careful not to choke on your aspirations Director" delivered in his usual tone, that would've been better. Instead it was "be careful not to choke on your aspirations", which wasn't Vader's usual style.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
I like the line, but I agree that the deliver was a little too heavy handed.

I wonder if RLM were in the theater sitting next to the kind of people that loudly go "AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" whenever a reference shows up, which is probably why they're so condescending lol.

But otherwise, their review had good points.

Rey is not a Mary Sue, let alone a "total" one.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities

>She is incredibly adapt at the force despite having zero training (Her connection to the Skywalker family if there even is one is meaningless as Luke still needed some guidance from Ben) to the point of being able to mind trick a stormtrooper despite zero experience in doing such.
>Manages to save Finn from tentacle rape with knowledge of the stations door controls despite never being on such a ship and only wandering for broken scraps of metal all her life.
>Can go toe to toe with Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel despite having never used a lightsaber before and Kylo was trained by Luke fucking Skywalker, the only hero in the OT that bested Vader.

I like Rey, don't get me wrong. But damn is she the fucking female Jesus of the new trilogy. At least Luke fucking sucked at everything in IV except for making the torpedo shot in the end and got fucking destroyed by Vader in V.

I hate how Wookieepedia defaults to the Legends section and not the Canon section when looking shit up there.

bitter EU fags die

In their defense, Disney's termination of existing canon was really poorly done. The EU had books on how an entire Star Destroyer or the Death Star operated, and now considered "Non-canon". How does a Star Destroyer operate now? Fucking space magic until Disney releases an "Official" source for it. But they wont because that's not something that's going to make them two billion dollars. They only brought Thrawn back he's popular enough to make money and even then they had to butcher him and remove the glowing non-pupil eyes, that was a menacing feature part of his character. They'll probably remove Outbound Flight from his new book too.

The problem is there's a lot of stuff in the EU that can still work with the new canon, and wont get a new "Official" version, so axing it was pointless.

Not a fair comparison, because that's movie #2 of the OT. TFA is movie #1, so it's only reasonable to compare Rey to the Luke we know from ANH. Where he displayed some Mary Sue-like tendencies as well--on top of being an annoying brat.

Don't forget in Empire Strikes Back, Vader chokes one of his captains and after he kills him, Vader says "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." I always thought that was pretty funny.

People do this? Just saying "Star Wars" in reference to one movie is way too vague.

Half his explanation (Such as Rey's childhood and Luke's lightsaber) is based off stuff that has no sources. All you gotta do on Jakku is pick up parts left over from the war and turn them in for food. I can make claims about her childhood too since we have no official source on it. I can say that the Star Destroyer had no other scavengers around it so most of her survival came easily from being the only one taking shit from it and scrapping it for food. Point is, until we get a more fleshed out backstory, her skills and assets are seemingly out of the blue. Luke's lightsaber having a will of its own? That's pretty far fetched even with the visions she gets from touching it. Nothing else in the entire universe (even the balls to the walls crazy EU) has something like this.

He missed a lot of his blaster shots, gets hit by a training sphere (only hitting it after Ben's guidance), the skills he does have are actually explained from his farming days (shooting with a vehicle on a moisture farm is the same as making a shot on the trench run for example), and he was only able to pull off the final hit on the Death Star with the force and would;ve missed had it not been for Ben's space ghost. Your article also tries to point out Anakin being an easy ace pilot in episode I for an example of piloting being easy, yet Anakin was a Gary Stu as well.

Many do it just to reference the cultural history the original film had, especially since a lot of movie posters before ESB simply had it labeled "Star Wars". Anyone who does reference it as such without giving the same type of history lesson is of course probably doing it to feel authentic like Verb said.

But none of his "funny" sayings in the OT were in reference to his ability to force choke people like we got in Rogue One.
"Wow my force powers are so fucking cool" is basically what we get out of the line and it's not Vader at all.

Just got back from the movie. It was just about what I expected. Not my favorite Star Wars movie by a mile nor was it Clone Wars but it aint no Attack of the Clones either.

Spoiler
I liked Black Box K-2SO.
Vader was...eh, his voice put me off. At least it wasnt batttlefront bad.
Leah's ship's escape was an aspect I was not a fan of either.

finished my SW marathon

that was fun, but in terms of my rankings, only one thing has changed: AotC has gone up (7>3>R>1>2=6>4>5)

previously i had it ranked as my least favorite prequel (still is), mainly because it's so bogged down by its obligatory romance scenes--but honestly, it's not that any of them were poorly executed, because none of them were; i just have a personal distaste for romance scenes in general and i probably shouldn't let that affect my overall opinion of the film, but at the same time, i feel the exact same way about RotJ in a lot of ways--so i've set them equal

also, AotC has a lot of what i'd consider some of the best scenes in the entire franchise and i'm not being ironic

so the prequels are back on top while the OT's huddled in the basement once again--something about that just feels right

Hayden's acting + the music. A lot of actors have trouble conveying more than one emotion with their face at a time, but after Shmi dies, Hayden's expression goes fluidly from utter devastation and pit-in-the-stomach sorrow to murderous, genocidal anger in a short (yet natural) amount of time.

This is complemented and reflected beautifully by John Williams's score, which is naturally mournful at first, but starts spiraling out if control in a very sinister, un-Star Wars-like way as soon as Anakin raises his head, having decided what he's about to do next. The first time I saw the scene, I remember even feeling a twinge of fear for what he was about to do--what would I do if I found my mother tied up and tortured to death?

It evokes all these dark and unpleasant thoughts that you simply don't get in the OT, but it's not totally out of place in the narrative, either--this scene is essentially the birth of Darth Vader; the first time we see him do anything unconscionably evil, yet we obviously sympathize with him.

As for the other scene, I mainly enjoy it for all the lore/world-building it offered. Kamino is one of my favorite planets in the Star Wars universe, and I love how they managed to tie the origin of the stormtroopers to the story. You hear about the "clone wars" in passing in A New Hope, so that draws some curiosity as to what the clone wars were and how it all started and whatnot. It's just a cool scene.

The first scene, though, is top 5 Star Wars scenes for me, easily.
